I arrived at Zia Records in Chandler around 2:30, about a half an hour before they were scheduled to arrive, along with my 3-year old daughter. She was excited to see “Jasper“, and kept asking where he was. When I arrived, there were probably another ten fans there. The Zia Records staff were walking around, selling copies of the band’s new album Grape.
For unknown reasons, the band ended up being two hours late, arriving just before 5:00. By this time, the crowd was fairly large (for such a small record store). When the band took the stage, they played three songs acoustically, and finished with their new song “Keep Awake,” (available for free download here) which they described as a feel-good, holiday song that we could sing to our children (major sarcasm). This song is, by far, my favorite of theirs. And as it turns out, my daughter’s, as well. She kept singing it on the car ride home, and I kept telling her “Don’t sing that in front of Daddy.” By the way, Jackson looked completely adorable, and I loved his slight Texas accent!
After the performance was over, the Zia staff told everyone to line up against the wall for autographs. This method was highly unorganized and proved to be unfair, as those of us who were there first, were not given the opportunity to get our autographs first.
Unfortunately, I would have been at the very end of the autograph line, since I wasn’t able to rush to get in line with my daughter. And by this time, it was approximately 5:30, and I had to get home to feed my daughter and leave for the other 100 Monkeys performance at Martini Ranch. So, needless to say, I’m slightly disappointed at not getting the opportunity to meet them.
Stay tuned for more pictures and information from the Martini Ranch performance.
