Based on the popular Nickelodeon animated series, M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender centres on the journey of 12-year-old boy Aang as he masters the four elements – earth, wind, fire and water – to defeat the evil fire nation. Joining him on the hero’s journey is Sokka and Katara, two members of the Water Tribe played by Twilight’s Jackson Rathbone and Nicola Peltz. DS sat down with the pair to discuss their characters, dodge Rathbone’s attempts to bend water and hear a bad joke about ‘the twist’. Click ‘play’ below to watch the interview.

Jackson Rathbone Addresses ‘Last Airbender’ Critics: ‘Art Is Subjective’

The critics in the U.S. … I just don’t think they really like M. Night Shyamalan anymore,’ ‘Twilight’ actor says.

“The critics in the U.S. … I just don’t think they really like M. Night Shyamalan anymore,” Rathbone told MTV News while on the blue carpet for the 2010 Teen Choice Awards. “I don’t know why. It’s sad because he’s such an amazing director and an amazing person.”

The film, written and directed by Shyamalan, is a live-action remake of the popular Nickelodeon animated TV series “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and the first installment in a proposed trilogy. It received mixed reviews from critics, many who said the film emphasized style over substance. Nonetheless, Rathbone stands by the film’s box-office performance, adding that Shyamalan’s popularity is stronger than ever in foreign markets.

“It was interesting, the reception with ‘The Last Airbender,’ because they did extremely well with the U.S. domestic box office and even better than expected overseas,” he said. “Overseas, internationally, they still love him and think his work is genius.”

In the end, Rathbone believes it’s just a matter of taste. “It’s just one of those things,” he said. “Art is subjective.”

Shyamalan’s mettle will next be tested with September’s stuck-in-an-elevator horror-thriller “Devil,” a story he conceptualized, while Rathbone will begin work on the two-part “Breaking Dawn” film this fall.

Vampire star Jackson Rathbone on his family ties to legendary swashbuckler

jacksonrathbone3 237x300 Vampire star Jackson Rathbone on his family ties to legendary swashbuckler

TWILIGHT star Jackson Rathbone has revealed how big-screen spills and thrills are in his blood.

The Hollywood hunk stars as soulful vampire Jasper Hale in the smash hit series of Twilight adventures.

Now he’s about to be seen as one of the superheroes of the big budget family fantasy, The Last Airbender.

And Jackson, 25, reveals how all this action is practically second nature to him because he’s related to movie legend Basil Rathbone.

Best known for his Sherlock Holmes films, Rathbone, who died in 1967, was also famed as the greatest swordsman ever to grace the silver screen.

One of his most memorable big screen sword fights, of course, was with Errol Flynn in The Adventures Of Robin Hood. Naturally, Jackson is delighted to have this connection with one of the greats of the golden age of cinema.

He said: “I have a close bloodline to Basil Rathbone, who is my grandfather’s third cousin several times removed. I don’t like to talk about how many times removed.

“He taught Errol Flynn how to use a sword and he is one of the greatest swordsmen in Hollywood history.”

Jackson jokes that he has a bit of catching up to do before he can cut a dash like his famous ancestor. In The Last Airbender, the young actor’s weapon of choice is a weird-looking boomerang.

He said: “Hopefully, if we get to make the next two films in the series then you’ll get to see me become a swordsman. Then I’d really follow in Basil Rathbone’s footsteps.”

Jackson is a young star in great demand, starring alongside Robert Pattinson and Kirsten Stewart in Eclipse, the latest story in the Twilight saga. The fourth edition, Breaking Dawn, is on the way.

But he stresses the importance of keeping himself grounded. He said: “I’ve just been extremely lucky in my career to be able to constantly work with people I respect and admire.”

In Eclipse, Jackson got more screen time as we discovered his character Jasper was a Confederate soldier who became a vampire during the American Civil War.

But he says it was only during the shooting of The Last Airbender on location in a fairly remote part of the world that he realised the global impact of the Twilight movies.

He said: “We filmed some of the movie in Greenland and all the local people knew us. We were in this small town called Ilulissat and it was incredible.”

When he was in Greenland, Jackson – who has a rock band called 100 Monkeys – was also persuaded to show off his musical talent.

He said: “I got hooked up with a gig at the local pub and I played a set by myself on guitar.”

Jackson was joined on stage by the acclaimed producer Frank Marshall, whose hits include the Indiana Jones films.

“Frank sang Stormy Monday, I played slide guitar with the house band and we got ourselves some fans,” he added.

Jackson was born in Singapore but grew up in Texas and came very close to having a tartan showbiz connection.

After graduating from college in Michigan, he had planned to cross the Atlantic and to study at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow.

But that notion was dumped when he was signed up to appear as a regular reporter on TV show Disney 411, interviewing rising stars. He also got acting roles in hit shows like The OC, before Twilight sent his career into orbit.

Acting and music have been his passions since he was a young teenager.

He says: “When I was about 13 or 14, I got into community theatre in Texas. I just noticed all the pretty girls were actresses and I wanted to be where they were.”

jackson rathbone madrid airbender 04 Jackson Rathbone: Last Airbender 2?

Jackson Rathbone gives two thumbs up as he attends a photo call for The Last Airbender at the Villamagna Hotel in Madrid, Spain on Tuesday morning (July 13).

The 25-year-old actor was joined by costars Dev Patel, Nicola Peltz and director M. Night Shyamalan.

M. Night recently caught up with MTV on his plans for the Airbender series, saying, “”I do [have scripts for sequels]. The third is more ambiguous, but the second one, I’ve written a draft that I’m really happy with and is darker and richer, and it has a wonderful antagonist in it in Azula, who’s kind of like our only real, pure antagonist in the series, so I’m excited about that.”

Eclipse beats Last Airbender

eclipse twilight 320 Eclipse beats Last Airbender

by Nicole Sperling

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse couldn’t match the first six days of its predecessor, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, but with $175 million in its coffers, the film still pulled off one of the biggest openings ever. (New Moon earned $178 million in its first six days.) Female audiences internationally swooned for the third installment of the popular series, which now boasts a worldwide gross of $275 million.

The Last Airbender performed incredibly well, grossing $70 million over its first five days. The PG-rated film from M. Night Shyamalan has its own rabid fan base that came out in droves despite dismal reviews. And the movie’s three-day weekend gross of $40 million marks the third highest for Shyamalan, behind Signs and The Village.

Toy Story 3, Grown Ups, and Knight and Day dominated the rest of the top five. Toy Story 3 crossed the $300 million mark as expected, with a four-day gross of $42 million. It now stands as the second highest-grossing Pixar film. (It will surpass Finding Nemo shortly.) Grown Ups took in $26 million for the four days, bringing its cume to $85 million. Knight and Day generated $14 million for its second weekend in theaters. The Tom Cruise-starrer’s total take is hovering near $50 million. Hope the holiday was a good one. Til next week…
