Kellan Lutz Says Guys are Going to Drag Girls to Eclipse

This is an extended interview of the one from Sunday’s LA Times.

Twilight Eclipse

The family that slays together, stays together. At least that’s the case for the Cullen brood.

In “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” which hits theaters June 30, Seattle is ravaged by a series of killings caused by an army of newborn vampires controlled by revenge-seeking bloodsucker Victoria. To combat the threat against Bella (Kristen Stewart) in this third installment of the franchise, the Cullens must band together and join forces with their sworn enemies, the wolf pack.

“The whole family is in a vulnerable position because of the love we have for Bella,” said Elizabeth Reaser, who plays matriarch Esme Cullen. “If she’s not OK, we’re not OK.”

In the past, we’ve seen the clan hit baseballs so hard that they can play only in a thunderstorm, to block out the sound. And we’ve watched the buttoned-up human imposters welcome Bella into their home as the human girlfriend of one of their own — the handsome Edward.

Twilight Eclipse big three

“This time around, you get to see their true vampire-ness,” said Peter Facinelli, who plays head vampire Dr. Carlisle Cullen in the series based on the bestselling books by Stephenie Meyer.

The film is being helmed by David Slade, the edgy filmmaker behind “Hard Candy” and “30 Days of Night.” And if the trailer is any indication, he’s definitely given the franchise a darker sensibility.

“The guys are going to bring their girlfriends to this one, mark my words,” said Kellan Lutz, who plays Emmett Cullen. “There’s a lot of fighting, a lot of cool stunts. It’s a little darker. The stuff I’ve seen so far is amazing. Amazing. The music is great. Everything is just really captivating. I’m excited to see it, and I’m excited for the fans to see it. The stunts are so cool. It was a bit weird, like for the main battle scene where the newborns come in. I mean, we’re looking at these cardboard cutouts as we’re acting, as we’re supposed to be head-butting creatures. So to see it live on the screen is so cool. And running on the treadmills to do the chase scene was awesome. We were being pulled by a truck going really fast to make it seem like we were running at vampiric speed. To see it on screen, it looks epic.”

What else can we expect from the pale-faced Cullen family (which includes the Hale siblings) this go-round? Here’s what the actors say audiences can expect from the story and their characters:

Peter Facinelli

Facinelli: “For me, as Carlisle, it’s an exciting portion of the series. Carlisle is very compassionate and he has a lot of killing to do in this movie. I joke, after he kills the bad guys, he says he’s sorry in his head. And, you know, he’s calm and level-headed. He’s the rock of the family. He usually has a lot of information to draw from because Alice can see into the future and Edward can read minds. In this third movie, he’s not getting that information. Neither one of his sources are working, so he’s kind of flying blind.”

Robert Pattinson (as Edward Cullen): Snagging a phone interview with the brooding dreamboat — who was overseas shooting his latest film, “Bel Ami” — proved difficult. So what can we expect from the lovesick Edward? He promises to love Bella “every moment of forever,” as the trailer reveals. He’s still hesitant about her becoming a vampire. He’s determined to protect her from Victoria. And he’s vying with Jacob for her affections. Oh, the life of an antique teenage vampire.

Elizabeth Reaser

Reaser: “Esme is still a vampire. She still wants to kill people all day long. It was interesting to get in touch with the vampire side of her in ways that haven’t really been explored. Her family is in danger and that brings out the mama bear in her.

Ashley Greene (as Alice Cullen): “Yeah, she’s delicate and prissy at times, but Alice gets a little edgier with each installment. And with these vampires messing with her family and the people she loves, you’re going to see a bit of her toughness. It’s a reminder to the audience that even though we restrain ourselves at times, we’re still vampires and we’re dangerous. You’re going to see the dark, dangerous side of Alice.”

Kellan Lutz (as Emmett Cullen): “You’re going to see a smile on Emmett’s face from start to finish. He just loves to fight. And there’s a lot of fighting. He sort of plays bigger in this one than the others.”

Nikki Reed

Nikki Reed (as Rosalie Hale): “You see a reason for her attitude. I think fans will feel for her. There was a bit of that in ‘New Moon.’ Fans got to see a bit of her sensitive side. Her sane side. Her logical side. And her desire to help her family. This time around, she is much more of a participant. She’s a survivor. This is her family. So if protecting Bella means protecting her family, she’s going to do it.”

Jackson Rathbone (as Jasper Hale): “You’ll get to see a little bit of the root of what makes Jasper so withdrawn and quiet in the Cullen family. Fans will get some of Jasper’s back story in ‘Eclipse.’ I got to wear the whole Civil War gear and everything. There’s a bit of the softer and darker side of Jasper in this film.”

Ashley Greene on Watching Scenes from Eclipse
Apr 9

Incredible werewolves and fight scenes? Ok, good. It is the great Alice/Jasper scene she refers to, thought, that gets me interested. Bring on the the love for those two!

These days, there are people who would gladly name their first-born child Renesmee if given the opportunity to see June 30’s “Eclipse” two months early. Granted, Ashley Greene has connections that give her a level of access no normal Twilighter could achieve — but recently, she saw a chunk of David Slade’s upcoming film and couldn’t help geeking out like any other Stephenie Meyer fan.

“I’m so excited about it!” Greene told us recently when we visited her on the set of “The Apparition,” a supernatural thriller that marks her first starring role.

In mid-March, Ashley was called in for “automated dialogue replacement,” a process used by movies in post-production to have actors dub in lines that need to be tweaked or added to the finished film. In order to do so, actors are typically shown the completed footage so they can time their line readings correctly.

“A month ago, I got together with David Slade and we did the whole ADR thing,” Greene recalled. “And every time I’m in ADR, I’m like, ‘Why don’t you just roll the scene? I just need to see the whole scene.’ ”

Naturally, we’re guessing any good Twilighter would do the same. As a result of Ashley’s “thorough” approach to ADR work, she was among the first to enjoy some soon-to-be-classic “Eclipse” goodies.

“I got to see a lot of footage from it,” Ashley said. “And it looks really amazing.

“For one, the werewolves just look incredible in this one,” Greene said, adding that the beastly transformations of Jacob Black and his buddies are much improved over their “Breaking Dawn” manifestations. “They looked good in the last one, but of course we’re always trying to outdo ourselves, and so they look really incredible.

“Then, the whole fight sequence that I’ve seen really looks amazing,” Greene said of another of her favorite moments in the film, which is expected to bring more action and blood than any of the previous “Twilight” movies. “We worked our tails off for it.”

Singling out one more moment, she added: “I definitely think there is one scene in particular between Jackson [Rathbone]’s character Jasper and my character Alice that I think everyone is going to like.”

With just over two months left before the eagerly anticipated film’s release, Ashley left her “Twilight” fans with some encouraging words: “I don’t think anyone will be disappointed.”

Jackson Rathbone Says We’ll See What Jasper Has Been Holding Back

The NY Post interviewed Jackson Rathbone, after having watched his new movie “Dread” and had a “retching” response to it. They also touch on Jasper Cullen’s back story, which we cannot wait to see brought to life.

PopWrap: I’m not going to lie, this film actually made me physically ill at the end.
Jackson Rathbone: Oh, excellent. That’s what I was hoping for!

PW: When did you know “Dread” had the ability to evoke this kind of response?
Jackson: I gave the script to a friend and he said that almost made him wretch, and that’s when I knew I had to make this movie.

dread Jackson Rathbone Says Well See What Jasper Has Been Holding Back

PW: The last 20 minutes are easily the hardest to watch, what was it like on set that day?
Jackson: Well, I like to be on set as much as possible, even if I’m not in that particular scene, I love watching. But I definitely wanted to be there that day. It was a gut-wrenching scene to watch and I thought Hanne Steen did a great job making that honest and real.

PW: What kind of affect on your performance does being on set that much have?
Jackson: I think when you enjoy the process of filmmaking, it makes the movie better because you love what you’re doing. There are a lot of dark scenes but we had such wonderful people around on set, that it created this amazing environment where we could just be honest.

PW: Any end of day rituals for releasing the tension?
Jackson: We’d always blare some crazy pop music in the makeup and hair trailers at the end of the day. Dancey, girly, Brit pop. We’d boogie down, and that would relieve some of the tension.

PW: Seems like music is a common theme on your sets — the “Twilight” cast is all pretty musical as well, right?

Who’s Backstory Would You MOST Like to Read?
Mar 31

Categories: Carlisle Cullen, Jasper Cullen, The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, Twilight Saga Eclipse Book, breaking dawn, vampires

Hot off the announcement of Bree’ Tanner’s backstory,  I know you all want to chime in on who you would like to know more about.  MTV listed their choices. I totally agree about Carlisle. Oh there are so many things I’d like to know so much more about, who knows where to begin!

jasper Whos Backstory Would You MOST Like to Read?Jasper Hale

Sure, we get his back story in “Eclipse,” but the man is the most tortured of all (yes, Edward, all) of the Cullen clan. Not only does he have the hardest time controlling his need for human blood, but we also are dying to read from his perspective how it feels to want to kill Bella every time she walks into the room without unconditional love holding him back. It would also be fun to see where he and Alice run off to at the end of “Breaking Dawn” from his perspective, because that was one of the biggest WTF?! moments of the series.

jane Whos Backstory Would You MOST Like to Read?Jane

The Volturi only actually pop into the story a couple of times during the course of the “Saga,” but those few times are some of our favorites. We’d love to see the shenanigans the Volturi get themselves into over in Italy from their perspective, plus how they feel when they see the Edward/Bella dynamic for the first time. Plus it gives Dakota Fanning a chance to star in her own spin-off movie.

jessica Whos Backstory Would You MOST Like to Read?Jessica Stanley

We didn’t really start loving Jessica’s character until we saw Anna Kendrick’s portrayal of her in the films, but OME if she isn’t one of our favorite parts of the movies. Maybe Anna should be the one to pen this spin-off to incorporate some of her signature snark, but we would love to see Bella’s story through one of the humans’ point of view. Because, for anyone on the outside who doesn’t know something supernatural is going on, that has got to be one of the weirdest love stories to watch play out ever.

quil2 Whos Backstory Would You MOST Like to Read?Quil Ateara

Except for the fact Jacob was miserable during the second section of “Breaking Dawn,” we liked how the story was told from a werewolf perspective. Though Quil might seem like the most uninteresting of the Quileute tribe at first glance, that’s kind of the point. Bella and Bree are both pretty bland on the surface, but that makes it easier for the reader to take up that consciousness on their own. Plus, Quil was one of the last to become a werewolf and isn’t bogged down with daddy drama like Seth and Leah Clearwater, which makes it easier to read his story and understand.

carlisle Whos Backstory Would You MOST Like to Read?Carlisle Cullen

This wouldn’t be a spin-off, this would be an epic. Carlisle has one of the coolest storylines in the book, and it stretches back for a really long time. Some of his storyline is told in the novels, but we have no issue reading 2,000 pages to see it all from his perspective. For some crazy reason, we don’t think you fans would have an issue either.

Jackson Rathbone Will Show What Makes Jasper Tick in Eclipse

eclipseSP 001770 300x168 Jackson Rathbone Will Show What Makes Jasper Tick in Eclipse

Jackson Rathbone discusses Jasper in Eclipse, saying he is almost depressed over his struggle to be a vegi vamp and as a result is in great pain, as he fights in inner demons.

“There are some really cool action scenes,” Jackson told Hollywood Crush. “We worked with some amazing stunt men and women who were so incredible and just a lot of fun to work with and collaborate with. They taught me a lot. So I hope to see a lot more of the action [in the next 'Eclipse' trailer].”

Though we don’t learn much about Jackson’s Jasper Hale in “Twilight” and “New Moon,” his background is explored much more in “Eclipse.” “I’m excited for a step up with Jasper’s character,” Jackson said. “It’s been two, three years and now I get to kind of go outside and show a little bit more of what makes Jasper tick. We get to go into his back story — see where he came from, who he was before, what makes him who we see in the first film of ‘Twilight,’ what makes him seem like he’s always in pain, why he’s always in pain … because he is.”

So why, exactly, is he in so much agony? “He’s almost depressed,” Jackson said. “He wants to live a good life. He wants to be part of the Cullen family. He is the newest to this vegetarian vampire way of life, and he’s still trying to be part of that and address his inner demons and what he used to be. It was really fun to be able to express that.”

Jackson credits director David Slade, whom he called “amazing,” with helping to show how Jasper evolved into his present self. “I’ve always been a fan of his, especially his first film, ‘Hard Candy.’ I thought he did an incredible job with ‘30 Days of Night,’ so when I first got there, I talked his ear off about ‘30 Days of Night’ and how he got a couple of shots and all that.”

Some of Jackson’s favorite scenes to film were the ones that explore Jasper’s origins. “Whenever we got to go into Jasper’s back story,” he said, “I got to don the Civil War regalia and ride a horse. It had been years since I’d been on a horse, so it was fun. I used to ride when I was in Texas.”

According to some folks in the know (i.e. lucky people who have seen parts of the film), Jackson gives one of breakout performances in “Eclipse.” Jackson, however, brushed off the compliment, saying it was a little too soon to judge.

“I’d say wait for the film before you compliment me,” he chuckled.

Jackson Rathbone Talks about Eclipse Fights and Maria

jasper eclipse

FearNet caught up with Jackson Rathbone during his 100 Monkeys tour and he agreed to chat a bit about Eclipse. He refers to punching Alice and Rosalie for the big fight scene. Here is their interview:

FEARnet: In The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, you get to work with Catalina Sandino Moreno…

Ah man, Catalina. That was amazing, working with her. I was a huge fan of Maria, Full of Grace and she was lovely to work with.

We’ll finally get to learn a little bit more about your character, Jasper Hale. What we can expect to see from Jasper’s flashbacks and your scenes with Catalina?

Jasper’s back story is that he was turned into a vampire during the Civil War era, so I got to don the Civil War regalia and ride a horse again — I haven’t been on a horse in like two years, so that was really fun. Basically, that’s how I meet Maria, who’s played by Catalina. Maria turns Jasper in order to make him the leader, or trainer, of the army that she needs in the South. Vampire armies are very prevalent in the South in those days. You’ll get to see a lot of deadly training vampire scenes, and a little bit of the love-lust relationship between Jasper and Maria and how it doesn’t really pan out.

Sounds like the type of turning scene your fans are going to love seeing. From the books and films, we know that vampires are turned with bites in various places; we’ve seen Carlisle, for example, bite Esme rather romantically on the neck to change her. So… can you tell us where exactly Maria bites Jasper?

Where does she bite him? Well, I don’t want to give everything away. I’ve got to keep some little secrets. [Laughs] I think people are going to be pretty happy about it.

Fair enough! Were there any particularly funny moments you had while filming Eclipse?

You know, whenever you get into these fight scenes it gets a little funny because you’re going after each other, and we’ve all been such good friends for three years now, so throwing a punch at your friend is kind of weird. Jasper has to train the Cullen family, so it was weird… I didn’t want to throw punches at Nikki Reed or Ashley [Greene]! It just didn’t feel right to me to hit a girl. I was raised very Southern, and that’s very wrong where I come from.

Switching gears to your musical interests, do you and 100 Monkeys have any plans to tour outside of the U.S.?

I think we are [but] I don’t know how soon. We have the rest of our dates that are posted on our website, but we’re going to try and get out to the U.K., and we really want to get down to Australia and South America. It’s just about finding the right time; hopefully we’ll get down there as soon as possible.
