newmoon totals1 New Moon Officially Ends Its Run at 4th Highest grossing Movie of 2009

From BoxOfficeMojo

The Twilight Saga: New Moon, The Princess and the Frog and The Wolfman and other high profile pictures officially ended their box office runs on Thursday, April 1. In other words, their distributors decided to stop tracking them, even though they may still be playing at a handful of theaters. For instance, New Moon, which has been out on video since Mar. 20, continued to show on at least five theaters, while Wolfman still haunted over 100 sites.

Winding up with $296.6 million in 133 days, New Moon was the fourth highest-grossing movie from 2009 and ranks 34th on the all time grosses chart (though it doesn’t crack the Top 150 in terms of estimated attendance). It also stands as the biggest teen romance and vampire movie on record, eclipsing the first Twilight for the title. New Moon impressed by building significantly on Twilight’s turn-out, which was $192.8 million. When a predecessor is that popular, it has been historically uncommon for a sequel to surpass it.

New Moon still holds the record for biggest single day with its $72.7 million haul on its opening day, Nov. 20, 2009, as well as the midnight showings record ($26.3 million). It also logged the third highest-grossing opening weekend of all time, $142.8 million, but has the distinction of being the most front-loaded blockbuster ever, making 48 percent of its total gross on its first weekend alone. One has to go down to No. 72 on the all time opening weekend chart, Valentine’s Day, to find a more front-heavy performance, while the first Twilight’s opening weekend accounted for 36 percent of its final tally.

The greatest growth for New Moon came on the foreign front. It has pulled in $413.1 million thus far, more than doubling what Twilight made. That puts its worldwide total at $710 million versus Twilight’s $385 million. New Moon’s initial DVD sales, though, haven’t trumped Twilight at the same rate: its first weekend reportedly sold an estimated 4 million units versus Twilight’s 3.8 million. Fans won’t have to wait a year for the next movie like they did for New Moon as the third entry, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, is scheduled to be unleashed on June 30.

It is sad to see it done but what a great result. Thanks to everyone who came along the journey with us, from the Premier to the DVD Party. Let’s keep it going for Eclipse and Breaking Dawn and maybe they’ll make more after that….
What are we going to be like when Breaking Dawn is over? I shudder at the thought. Thank goodness for DVDs.

This is sooo good! It adds a lot of background info on why Victoria is hunting Bella, how she feels about James being dead and how vampires in the Saga normally feel about humans. Important stuff!
(I DEMAND a 3 hour version of New Moon be released, if anyone is listening to me….)

CNN Interviews Chris Weitz about New Moon DVD

t1larg.newmoon.cast.gi CNN Interviews Chris Weitz about New Moon DVD

Probably the most interesting quote from this interview is one comparing Golden Compass to New Moon. Says Weitz, “I’ve bounced from a movie which, if anything, would be considered irreligious to a movie that some people consider to be a hidden advertisement for religion and chastity and all those things.” Your thoughts?

CNN: For the DVD, what do you think the fans will appreciate the most?

Chris Weitz: What they’ll appreciate most is certain scenes that didn’t make it into the film. … There’s basically more Bella [Kristen Stewart], there’s more Edward [Robert Pattinson], there’s more Jacob [Taylor Lautner], and it’s often sort of more extended versions of scenes where things are discussed at greater length rather than entirely new scenes. I think there’s a lot of good stuff in the movie for fans, and at the same time we didn’t want to get rid of any of their favorite scenes.

CNN: At the time the movie came out, you said you were hoping to do the commentary with Pattinson and Stewart. What happened?

Weitz: They blew me off! (laughs)

CNN: Those young actors.

Weitz: I have to say, they had a lot on their plates … and there came a day when it was just me in a room, and I said, “I don’t want to do this alone,” so we managed to get my editor [Peter Lambert] on a satellite linkup, and we watched the movie together. And I think that it’s frankly rather amusing, because we have a joshing relationship, whereas it may have been a bit more stilted had it been the kids and me, because they’d have to say nice things about me all the time.

CNN: When you watch the movie again, is it the kind of thing that you say, “Why did I make that decision?” perhaps because there was a deadline you had to hit.

chris weitz 3 Chris Weitz Discusses Deleted Scenes and Future Box Sets

Collider.com recently interviewed Chris Weitz about the New Moon DVD.  The transcripts of that discussion are below, but more interestingly, you can hear the actual phone call between Chris and Steve Weintraub if you click here.

The interviewer watched an unknown 2-disk version of the New Moon DVD and did not see the 10 minutes of deleted scenes Chris had told him would be on it.  Chris says he is not sure what happened to them.    (As far as the deleted scenes that we will be able to see, the interviewer  states he watched the basic version-maybe the version for movie rental places, which we know is cut down.  Borders,  on the other hand,  says their DVD will have “over 25 minutes of previously unreleased extended scenes, such as Jake in Bella’s Room and Edward meeting the Volturi and many, many more”.  This is  the “10 minutes of deleted scene” Chris talked about and more.  As far as a future box set, I want a full director’s cut of all 4(5) movies please!  We can only hope!

Here is the interview:

Spoiler Alert: Chris Weitz’ Comments on New Moon DVD

dreamscene 300x285 Spoiler Alert: Chris Weitz Comments on New Moon DVD

Gregory Ellwood unveils portions of Chris Weitz and editor Peter Lambert’s audio commentary on the New Moon DVD, taped just shortly after the movie premiered. Here is his enlightening article:

One of the most entertaining aspects of the new “Twilight Saga: New Moon” DVD and Blu-ray is the audio commentary from director Chris Weitz and his editor Peter Lambert.

During their long and funny conversation, Weitz makes a humbling revelation about one of his few regrets in the movie: the infamous moment where Aro (Michael Sheen) looks into Alice Cullen’s mind (Ashley Greene) and see the future fate of our hero Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart). What was meant as a dramatic reveal that Bella would become a vampire, and thus satisfy Aro’s wishes, drew unintentional laughter as audiences observed Bella and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) seemingly skipping through the forest in slow motion.

Speaking to Weitz earlier this week, the director laughed about the moment and admitted that he discovered the mistake a bit too late.

“I think it could have been less than an Arcadian fairy tale running through the foresty movement and more of an abstract at Kristen flash on her face,” Weitz says of what he would have changed. “That would have avoided laughter, which wasn’t only heard at the premiere where there are cynics and jaded Hollywood types, but the most packed fan screenings.”

Chris Weitz, who directed New Moon, the second installment in the Twilight series, says he has read the script for this summer’s third installment, Eclipse – and that one scene in particular is a scorcher.

“I’m looking forward to the sleeping bag scene, I gotta say,” Weitz tells PEOPLE. “That’s going to be very steamy.”
