Some of you would run screaming to the bookstore to get your hands on a new Twilight novel, while others of you would just … run screaming. So this news is only going to satisfy half of you.

Ten Twilight fans aged 15 to 34 won a roundtable meeting with Meyer in Vancouver, and according to USA Today, they were able to get quite a bit of info out of her, some of it spoilery.

And though she won’t be writing any more books about Edward and Bella because “the story’s already been told, and I doubt I’ll ever write another series based on the same characters,” she does have a return to Twilight percolating in the back of her mind.

When asked whether whether Jacob (the werewolf/shape shifter) and Renesmee (Edward and Bella’s human/vampire hybrid child) could ever have children, she replied:

“That is a question I’m reserving the right not to answer, because there is a chance I’ll go back to their story.”

As for what Meyer may be writing before she returns to Twilight, it looks like she’ll be trading in fangs for scales:

“When I was growing up, I was obsessed with mermaids. I do have a very elaborate outline for a book. I’m not working on it right now, but I have the feeling it’s going to be big. It’s going to be 1,000 pages.”

We don’t know whether Meyer can do for mermaids what she did for vamps, but considering the millions of copies sold of the books in the Twilight saga, it’s likely she will.

Though we’re betting only half of you will be pleased about that!

I know some fans thought that Summit intentionally leaked the Breaking Dawn photos, but this statement says otherwise. We all love the films and books and want to see as much as possible, as soon as possible, but let’s try to show our support by not encouraging illegal materials to be leaked. I have not seen the pictures and I am glad that I haven’t. I do not want to spoil the film for myself because I am sure it will be worth the wait. Here is what the filmmakers had to say…..

Dear Twilight Saga fans,

As some of you may know, pictures and screen grabs of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn as a work in progress have leaked on the internet. We are extremely proud of this film and also extremely heartbroken to see it out there at this stage.

The film and these images are not yet ready or in their proper context. They were illegally obtained and their early dissemination is deeply upsetting to the actors, the filmmakers and Summit who are working so hard to bring these movies to fruition to you in November 2011 and November 2012.

Please, for those who are posting, stop. And please, though the temptation is high, don’t view or pass on these images. Wait for the film in its beautiful, finished entirety to thrill you.

Sincerely,

Stephenie Meyer, Bill Condon, Wyck Godfrey and Summit Entertainment

We haven’t heard much about the film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s other best-selling novel “The Host” since the screen rights were purchased way back in September 2009. (In case you missed it, we cast the leading roles of Melanie/Wanda, Jared and Ian just for funsies.) Well, it now appears the production process is gaining steam as a director has just been announced!Variety is reporting that “Nanny McPhee Returns” director Susanna White will helm the film written by Andrew Niccol (”The Truman Show”). “The Host” will be just the second feature-length film Susanna will have directed, though she has plenty of TV movie and series experience. Not to mention, “Nanny” had its fair share of special effects, meaning she’s likely up for the task of directing a supernatural thriller. With a director in place, it looks like the task of assembling a winning cast can’t be too far behind.

For the uninitiated, “The Host” takes place on a post-alien-invasion Earth, in which extra-terrestrials takeover and inhabit human bodies. When Wanderer (also known as Wanda) takes over Melanie’s body, she realizes the human isn’t quite ready to give up her headspace. And, yes, there’s a love triangle. (It wouldn’t be a Stephenie Meyer special without one, amiright?)

Though we doubt “The Host” will be as all-consuming a worldwide phenomenon as “Twilight,” anything with Stephenie Meyer’s name attached is bound to do well at the box office, and we’re interested to see how the two film properties will compare.

I think I am more excited about this than BD! I adored ‘The Host’. I can’t wait for the casting to start. I am hoping for Henry Cavill will get a role of some kind in it. Ep! Who would you cast?

I’m sure it’s not surprise to Twilight fans that Stephenie Meyer has been named one of Forbes Most Powerful Women. SM comes in at #49 of 100 on the list.

Stephenie Meyer is no stranger to being named on Forbes top lists. She was recently also recognized on the 2010 Successful Author List, 2009 and 2010 Celebrity 100 List and 2009 Hollywood’s Top Earning Women List along with Dr. Carlisle Cullen being named one of the Forbes Wealthiest Fictional 15.

From the Forbes website:

Following the J.K. Rowling model of mum-turned-mega-millionaire, Stephenie Meyer had held only one job, as a receptionist in an Arizona property company before penning the bestselling Twilight series, which has sold 116 million copies worldwide. Meyer’s vision of a world where vampires and teens co-exist may be to blame for the blood-lusting trend that continues four years later with TV series like The Vampire Diaries. Her sci-fi romance novel, The Host, spent 26 weeks as a bestseller and is rumored to be in pre-production for a 2011 release. Meyer says she will be focusing her efforts on the final installments of the Twilight movie franchise, set to arrive in theaters in November 2011.

It’s funny how life is now divided into before and after Twilight!

The article is quite long, but it’s an interesting read.

By the numbers

Film: $3 billion

Publishing: $1.6 billion

Merchandising: $600 million

TV, DVDs: $1.2 billion

Other: $600 million

Hollywood has repeatedly peddled the apocalyptic threat from aliens, machines, comets, viruses and zombies, but who was watching the vampires?

Never exactly absent from the entertainment scene, those eternal bloodsuckers lately have infiltrated everything from big screens and little screens to bookstore shelves, clothing racks, download services, video games and video, record and jewelry stores.

Just this week, the Fox/New Regency “Twilight” parody “Vampires Suck” grossed $20 million, and 5 million regular viewers are rabidly following HBO’s newest hit, “True Blood,” as it swoops toward its season 3 finale Sept. 12. Meanwhile, Justin Cronin’s “The Passage,” Stephenie Meyer’s “Breaking Dawn” and Charlaine Harris’ “Dead and Gone” hover on best-seller lists.

These charming, deadly immortals are everywhere. And as a result, they’re spilling as much green as red — about $7 billion since the “Twilight” film franchise bowed less than two years ago, according to THR estimates.

What started with some ancient, hysterical myths and a pair of spooky 19th century tales — John Polidori’s “The Vampyre” (1819) and Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” (1897) — has bloomed into an entire inexhaustible industry. (Find out which vampire movies we’d like to see remade — and who should star — at the end of this article.)

“By starting with one simple mythological creature that’s been part of our literary universe for centuries, you can create a story that has it all: romance, horror, action, special effects, sex, epic love, wish fulfillment, romantic leading men, delicious bad-boy villains, female badasses, damsels in distress, death, monsters and, ultimately, the perfectly flawed hero who would give it all up if it meant they wouldn’t have to spend eternity alone,” says Julie Plec, writer and exec producer of the CW series “The Vampire Diaries.” It doesn’t get more universal than that.

That gets to the bloody heart of it. Because they’re not specific to genre, vampires have the freedom to roam not just across mediums but from romance to horror to political commentary to humor. Their versatility is endless, swinging from chaste innocence to sexy violence, so the potential audience is everyone.

No other subject has sunk its teeth into pop culture quite so pervasively.

Let’s start with the current king. Globally, the three “Twilight” films, released in 2008, 2009 and 2010, have a $1.76 billion cume at the global boxoffice. The first two each has grossed another $160 million or so in home video sales (the third hits Blu-ray/DVD in September). That’s more than $2 billion right there.

If the coming two installments of “Breaking Dawn” — which Summit will release in November 2011 and November 2012 — do similar business in theaters and the home-entertainment market, that would add another $1.7 billion to the coffers.

And that’s just from the movie versions of Meyer’s colossally successful book series.

In a continuation of the press junket from a couple of weeks ago, some fansites have posted more from their interview with Stephenie. I particularly like this one and I’m gonna quote my favourite part, but please do go on and read the entire thing

The link (with an audio file) is HERE

OK, most of you know that Breaking Dawn is my favorite part… and here Stephenie explains why much better than I ever could. Don’t laugh at me, but it made me cry! (Also, I have a soft spot for Anne of Green Gables )

LT: They all love talking about it. Um, so we were talking with them and we were talking about the character of Edward and kind of, it feels like in the end of New Moon, especially into Eclipse and especially in Breaking Dawn, it feels like his character changes a little bit. Or a lot maybe even. Um, how he goes from this strong, like as you said earlier, know-it-all to really almost a 180. Like simpering. Isn’t in control. Simpering is a bad word.

SM: There’s a lot of self-doubt that happens particularly after New Moon because this is someone who feels like he’s always had the answers and now he has screwed up worse than he’s ever screwed up in his entire life. And the one thing that he wanted more than anything else he destroyed her. And that was like so not what he was planning, so there is a lot of self-doubt. I feel like in Breaking Dawn the evolution completes where he goes from kind of like, not having hope or faith in himself, but faith in his ability to know everything. And he knows he’s right a lot. But he doesn’t have a lot of hope for anything and then he meets Bella and that throws everything into a mix and he screws up and he starts to doubt himself. In Breaking Dawn is the first time he really has faith and hope, like he comes around. He goes from being the worst pessimist to actually being an optimist, and for me that was a really big evolution. And it takes place a lot off screen in Breaking Dawn, because you know Bella is going through so much just here in her body it is very centered in her physically. And she has another battle, like she at this time has to say, “Edward, I can’t deal with you! I have something bigger to do here. Back off!” And so he becomes someone who believes at the end. Like the way she always has believed: “You and I are something special. This is gonna work out.” And he’s always felt like that she was wrong, and by the end he’s like: “You know what? I don’t even care what happens now ‘cause you’re right.” And see I always liked that about him, I liked that he was able to change. He’s one of those that changes. And Breaking Dawn for me was…on the surface there’s all this action, but for me it was all about Edward coming around. You know it’s hard for people though I think to watch the hot boy become the responsible dad because that’s not a sexy transition. Unless you have dated the hot boy and he has become the responsible dad to your children, and it’s really sexy. That’s not something that when you’re fourteen makes sense because dad is your father. But when it’s the father of your children it’s a whole other ballpark. A whole new level of sexy. You guys know. And that’s something that is not YA. It’s not a YA emotion and I always knew it was gonna go there.

(chatter)

SM: Oh my gosh it’s so sweet. It’s such a different level when you see them bond with their children. But I always knew this, that’s one of the reasons why it was hard to go YA because this was never gonna be…Remember Sweet Valley High? Okay, I’m really old.

Fansites: Yes!

SM: And those novels that like every…they’re still in high school. They’ve been there for 400 years and they’re still in high school. My books were theAnne of Green Gables where she grows up. She goes to college. She gets married. She has six kids. Her kids grow up. Her kids get married. I love the evolution. I love that they get to grow up and so for me the story was always…they were always gonna grow up.

Fansite: So it does change.

SM: And it does…It really changes. It’s not YA anymore in Breaking Dawn and that’s something that throws a lot of people.

Fansite: Totally.

SM: But I like letting them grow up. You feel bad when you make your characters stifle. They get to grow and change.

Alright so everyone on here that knows me also knows that I am not the biggest SM fan at times but this interview has made me really appreciate her in ways that I didn’t. I always knew that Summit had way more say than she ever could for the movies, but this interview shows just how much Summit tries to change up the books for the movies and how much SM fights to keep it the same. It is an audio interview so I have posted the transcript below. I know it is long but every TwiHard should read this!

Often scenes from the books are changed or left out all together for the flow of the movie. Stephenie explains how and why she picks her battles when it comes to depicting her books into movies. When do you choose your battles? In seeing the movie and the book. You have the book, they have a vision. They throw out a line, and you’re like “They would have never said that”

SM: It’s really difficult. Because you do have to choose which ones you won’t bow down on. And I know that even when I really say “Okay, I cannot live with that” It’s still 1 out of 10 I’ll get it. When I really throw a fit. Which is rare. It is really rare because I realize ya know, they’re making a movie. When they come to me for advice, I’m happy say things. There are very few things that I will….and its things that just feel so wrong, that there’s no other way. And some of them are such small little things that, like with the…(?) we were talking about. A lot of that was (?) related. It’s harder than you would think. It’s funny. Some things you take for granted in movies. And it’s amazing how difficult
some things are to do. One of the reasons we were back there was because, there was one blocking issue I had. And nobody else cared, but for me, it was such a key blocking thing. It physically had to look this way. That one, I was like “I really have to have this. I can’t see this like this” & everyone was like really?

Alison: All the fans would have cared. Not one fan would have been happy with that.

SM: The one thing I scheduled my whole schedule around in Eclipse was I had to be there for the tent scene was number one. That was on the calendar. And I had the other scenes in order of priority, and I had those dates booked. I was already going to Vancouver and they had a weather problem. They filmed it when I wasn’t there. So I’m like “Okay, I’m not gonna panic.” But in the original version, Jacob gets into the sleeping bag (whispers) and doesn’t touch her.

Alison: Like just his legs are gonna keep her warm from the bottom of the sleeping bag?

SM: It’s impossible to keep someone warm when doing that. And then you have the extra added thing. This is the girl he is in love with and he’s in a sleeping bag with her….I mean, come on. I was just like, “what…why aren’t you touching her? Why isn’t he touching her?” People are going to freak out.

Alison: Everybody would have freaked out

SM: It doesn’t make sense that he would do that and you’d sit there and say “why? He’s supposed to be warming her up, right?” Even if you had no baggage from reading the books, you would still have the same reaction. It was interesting, because the original script for it, I was fine with but then they tweaked the script because they felt like one part of the conversation got a lot more in depth in the original we kind of already knew. You know, you have the whole rehash when Edward’s talking about “when I first met her” and they pulled that and instead went with the later part of the scene where Jacob’s like “how did you cope?” And I think the emotionality of it just went through the roof.

Kim: The dialogue between Rob and Jake, I mean Edward and Jacob

Alison: And it was so long, and I loved how long it was

SM: Yeah! I love that they just let it happen. I think that, that was Rob’s best day of shooting. It was so funny, did you guys hear all the rumors about the problems? Rob was only supposed to be there for the last day. The first two were Jacob and Bella scenes where the wig had been a problem. The last day was the tent was the tent and that was it & it was a pretty easy shoot. The only problem for that day was that Kristen had the stomach flu and luckily, she was supposed to lay there, but between every like scene, oh, she was so sick. And Taylor, he was over digging around, grabbing garbage cans. Why is Taylor taking the garbage? Takes them over there so she could puke in them. It was so sweet. Everybody was taking care of her and everything, but it was a hard day. You look at actors and a lot of people are like “I wanna be an actor” it’s so hard and then to sit there. She’s wanting to puke and she’s all feverish, and she’s having to do the shivering. She was a work horse that day. That was our only drama was that poor Kristen got sick, and I think it was food poisoning. But it was a great shoot. It was one of those days where at the end you’re like “We really killed it today! It’s gonna be great!” It was a great day.

HOW SHE WILL OVERSEE ALL THIS AS A PRODUCER IN ‘BREAKING DAWN’

Alison: What made you decide to put the producer hat on for Breaking Dawn? And what do you think you’ll bring to that last movie?

SM: I don’t think it’s gonna change that much. I do feel like, I mean Breaking Dawn is tricky. It’s real tricky. Now, I feel like we have more of a handle on it. Because the script and with Bill Condon. I am more calm, but originally, I was very much on the fence. Maybe we shouldn’t make this into a movie, ya know. Some things can’t be made into a movie and come across exactly the right way. So it was a big struggle for me to go forward. I knew it would disappoint a lot of people, and that was really one of the main instances, that people would be like “What?” I didn’t want to disappoint people. So I was concerned. And still my plan was and still is, to be there every day. And so as the producer, can do that. So it’s really a lot about being….in the room. And it’s going to be a lot of upheaval in my life, but I felt like it was important. And then also, it’s the last one. So I kinda feel like, I’m going to commit to this for this year, I’ll get it done, and then I won’t do that again. And then also. I get to be more involved with it. Ya know, I think we will have a little more of the same music, which will be a big deal. Instead of hearing about the decisions afterward. We will be there when they are being made. That’s gonna help. With Eclipse, I was pretty much, right on the line with producing. I was very much involved with the script and a lot of the choices. So it’s not a huge difference, but it’ll be really, an interesting experience.

Kim: Well we breathed a sigh of relief when we heard you were producing.

SM: I don’t know if those sighs are a little bit premature. I’m not sure that there will be that much more that I can do. um…..but, I keep fighting. I can’t quite make myself give up, so.

Alison: We do appreciate it.

SM: They can’t be exactly like the book. So it’s about having those key things that can make it, have that feel of the book. They have really done a really great job and not all of it I get right away, because for me it’s like “no, keep it closer to the story”. Then I have to say. “Okay, this is a good alternate” but it has it’s merits…..like angry Edward. It wasn’t in the book, and yet….that has a lot of value for you. There are things that they’re able to do that I can’t do. It’s a nice little compliment. And like Taylor and the love for Jacob. That’s a good thing.

BELLA LEAVING WITH JACOB ON THE MOTORCYCLE
Instead of running off with Jacob when Edward was off hunting, Bella jumps on a motorcycle right in front of Edward’s face. The day the clip came out, all I heard was “Bella would never do that!” or “Book Bella would have never hurt Edward like that!”

SM: I have heard, I have read the comments, and I said the exact same thing. That was one of those days that I flew down. I’m like the way that this you know in the script I said the way that this is written her getting on the back of the bicycle is a direct response here “You lied to me, well I’m going with him” & we were able the day of, they cut down the clip that they played for MTV and stuff, we were able to soften it. We were able to get some lines in and you’ve seen the whole thing, so you know there’s a breakaway we tried to put in….her response to Edward, and then now it becomes about Jacob. “Why haven’t you called me?” We tried as hard as we could to soften, how that went down so it didn’t feel like, something “Well, I’m gonna go get on the back of his motorcycle” because I felt like that was NOT Bella at all & it’s not assertive, it’s rude. You know what I mean. It’s not like….

Alison: It’s too reactionary

SM: It’s not like, “I’m a strong female character” It’s like “I’m a jerk”

Alison: We were mad at movie Bella. (Laughs) Book Bella and I were okay, but movie Bella & I were like uh.

SM: That was more or less my same reaction. I think that in the form that it exists in the film……its better now. I think it works somewhat. I still think it’s kind of a stretch that she would do that. You only have so much you can do. That was one I lost. Early in I lost that one. You do what you can do.

Alison: They’ll be happy you agree!

What do you think Stephenie thinks of Angryward and Edward threatening Jacob for kissing Bella? Does she agree, does she thinks he’s hot?

SM: Ya know it’s funny about this scene, and Meghan’s giving me the eye. That’s the one I walked out on, on the dailies because in my head that scene was so much different. In the movie Edward is quite separate motivation-ally from the book Edward. At this point in the film in the story for me he’s gotten past this. Like he’s realized “I can’t act like a teenage boy anymore. I have to give her space. I have to be the mature one here.” And in that scene in the book, he has, icy calm control. He is very gentle. He is very soft spoken. He is very mature. So when I see him….and plus ya know, the movies are unable to bring to life some of the elements in the mythology. If Edward had, in anger, grabbed Jacob by the shoulder, his arm would have come off. And the fact that Taylor is uninjured, and that he just kind of sits there…..bothered me. So I’m like…wait! If we are gonna go for it, tear his arm off. Ya know. And it’s hard for them, because blood puts you over the limit and stuff, and they would not tear off Jacob’s arm. I’m like….if we want angry Edward, I wanna see some blood. They had already filmed that day, so we couldn’t redo it but, people have responded really well to it.

Kim: That is the thing because it is different than the book.

Alison: He’s as close to a vampire as we’ve seen him, because he was so restrained.

SM: And restraint is pretty much his middle name. And we don’t have the scene early in the book, where she comes back from La Push, and he’s like “are you trying to make me insane?” He really lost it. We don’t have that evolution where he goes overboard. We have a little bit, the battery disabling. Which is really over the line, and then he’s supposed to learn and he’s supposed to stop. By that point, we’re so far in, it’s like….”why is he still acting like this?” But okay, it is hot…I’ll give you that.

After reading this, how do you feel about the movies, Summit’s depiction of the characters, and about SM becoming a producer for BD? Let us know in the comment section!

“Tracing Pattinson’s family back to Vlad was difficult research, but the pieces that unraveled created the perfect accompaniment to the Twilight Saga,” said Anastasia Tyler, a genealogist at Ancestry.com. “Without any myth or magic, we find royalty and vampires lurking in Pattinson’s life — making his story just as supernatural as the one he’s playing on screen.”

Right? So we don’t have to…

All: (Lot’s of blabbering…)

And it’ll be out next month!” But that’s not true. It’s also not true that I’ve got a ton of work done on it, and that’s what I’m working on. What’s true is that I’m really burned out on vampires. And, I don’t want to write it badly. So I want to wait until I’m excited about the material again, and I’m excited about Edward, and that it’s something that’s motivating. You know, when a story is keeping me up at night, and I’m waking up at 4 am in the morning and thinking ‘Yes! That is what is what should happen in this moment!’ Then that is when I can write with happiness! So, right now it feels like homework… it really does. And when things feel like homework they go very, very slowly for me. So it’s still not a “It’s not gonna happen!” I want to do it when I can do it right. You know, I have my share of human stubbornness, and I have to tell you, it’s a little bit hard when people are like “This is the only thing you can do, and it’s the only thing we care about!” And, you’re kind of like a three year old, you want to be like “I’m gonna do what I wanna do!” Yah. “You’re not the boss of me!” So my mom has backed off a little bit. Actually, I was at The Fray concert, and I was hanging out with the guys backstage. They’re really cool, and I was talking to Isaac about it. He was like, “I really want you to do that!” And I was like “Oh my gosh! Come on!” You know I can’t get away from it anywhere. And, we talked about stubbornness and reverse psychology. I have this great thing he signed for me, it says “To Stephenie, Don’t work on that stupid book! Nobody wants it anyway!” I have it by my computer. That really is the right direction to go with me, because I’m like “Huh! Maybe I should do it! I’ll show you!” Psychology! Anyway, that’s Midnight Sun! so, that should disappoint everyone!

TwilightSeriesTheories: I don’t think so!

Stephenie: Ok! so now we’re done! (Laughing) So, I’ll see you guys later!

All: (Laughing)

LetterstoTwilight: That’s totally understandable.

Twilight Series Theories: I haven’t read it!

Stephenie: The people I worry about are the haters. You know, that like to talk about what a horrible writer I am and all that stuff. When I do write it they’re going to say “Oh, this was worse than the first half because now she did it badly!” No matter what I do it’s going to be that way. There’s a mental block there. You know what people are going to say, so I have wait until it’s just me and the book again. Then I can feel excited about it! You know, sometimes I’ll sit and think about the car chase, that we don’t get to see from Bella’s perspective. I have that one completely mapped out in my head. That one wouldn’t be hard to get down. Stuff like that, it gets exciting. Cars. Ya know! The first car he steals I have picked out, and then the second one. It get’s messy! It’s gonna be great! You have to get excited about things! But, that’s Midnight Sun!

David Slade, Melissa Rosenberg & Wyck Godfrey go into the background of the movies in this press interview. Very Interesting! Wyck came up with Edward’s “Does he own a shirt?” line, which is so great to Team Edward fans. Also they talk about a few scenes they plan to put on the Eclipse DVD! Right at the end of the interview, Rosenberg make some comments on future Twilight Saga movies. Go read it and see what you think she is saying.
Here are a few portions that I thought were particularly interesting from the interview:
(Click here to read it all.)

Q: David, what were the specific changes you wanted to make, going into the film?

David: With Edward, I really wanted to make sure this character was dangerous. In the last movie, he had played a different character arc, but in this movie, I wanted to bring out the carnivore in him. That had to come throughout the film, and he hadn’t really done that so much. That was the main thing. I tried to look at every scene, with that in mind. Underlying everything is danger. That was the intention.

Q: Do you have any special features or extras planned for the DVD?

Wyck: There’s the nude scene we shot that wasn’t in the book. No. I don’t know. With any film, you go through the process of editing it down to its fighting weight and, ultimately, you’re going to have some scenes that didn’t end up in the movie.

David: There were a number of scenes which just felt excessive, in terms of beating the same story, but some of them were really nice.

David: What happens is that the film has its own momentum from the script. When you start going, by the time you hit the third act, you’re just blasting along, and that scene just came to a stop. But, it’s a beautiful scene that’s beautifully performed, and it’ll be a nice little bonus for fans of the book.

Wyck: I think there’s going to be a lot of classic behind-the-scenes stuff, where you’re going to get to see how we did most of the action and stunts in the movie, and a lot of the CG process. That stuff will flesh out the experience for audiences that do like to go behind the camera and see how it’s all done.

Melissa: It’s interesting, when I did the first Twilight movie, I actually wrote it before it was cast. I was writing in a vacuum, and it actually had a lot of humor in it. And then, we realized, as we got it on actors, that it just wasn’t appropriate. But, now the actors are more comfortable with it and I think the story lends itself to that. Wyck actually came up with the best line in the movie, “Does he own a shirt?” There’s a confidence level in the storytelling now.

And this:

Q: With the wealth of backstory and appetite for more Twilight, would you see doing movies on Alice or any of the other characters, with Stephenie’s approval?

Melissa: I think she’s going to do that. I would look at anything she wrote. If this series is going to expand, it will be by her doing.

Q: Will it always be book first?

Melissa: I would think it would be. I haven’t even thought of it, but I would think it would have to be book first.

Talk about selling like hotcakes! Booksellers.com reports that according to Nielsen, “the book sold 79 copies per minute on average between its launch and 23:59 on the same day.” They don’t yet know the online statistics. That is pretty amazing and only includes UK data!

Did you buy it or read it online?

Stephenie Meyer’s The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner (Atom) sold 89,549 print copies in a little under 19 hours, becoming one of the fastest-selling books since records began.

Strictly embargoed until 5:05am on Saturday 5th June, the book sold 79 copies per minute on average between its launch and 23:59 on the same day (when Nielsen BookScan collects its data). A grand total of £512,226 was spent on the £11.99 Twilight novella, which sold at an average discount of 52.3%, plunging its average selling price to just £5.72.

It is not known how many e-copies have been sold. However, the book is currently fifth on the UK iBookstore chart, where it costs £8.99, and 131st on the UK Kindle store, where it costs $11.74 (£8.17).

Only two authors have enjoyed stronger opening sales from hardback titles: J K Rowling and Dan Brown. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Bloomsbury) currently holds the fastest-selling record as it sold 3.6m copies in its first 24 hours when it was released on 21st July 2007, while Brown’s The Lost Symbol (Bantam Press) sold 550,946 copies in its first five days on sale in September last year.

Helped by the Twilight spin-off’s release during the half-term break, sales of all of Meyer’s Twilight novels jumped by an average of 8.5% week-on-week during the seven days to 5th June, while Eclipse’s sales were further boosted by the release of a film tie-in edition to the adaptation which hits UK cinemas on 9th July.

Two pence in every pound spent on books in the UK last week went towards a copy of The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, boosting total week-on-week sales by 2.1% to £26.6m‚ up 1.7% on the same week last year. It is the first time since December last year that book sales have been up year on year for two consecutive weeks.

When the release date for “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner” was announced as June 5, it didn’t seem like much of a coincidence that the date so closely preceded the June 30 release of “Eclipse.” Well, in a recent interview with USA Today, Stephenie Meyer flat out said that she wanted the book to get out before the film’s release because some elements from the novella would be used in “Eclipse.”

After reading “Short Second Life,” it was easy to pick out some scenes that were most likely to make it into the film, as well as to realize that some already have. It’s sort of a tongue-in-cheek move, because while those who haven’t read Stephenie’s newest installment will think that the newborn vampire scenes were David Slade’s creative vision, those who have will get a kick out of seeing Bree’s story come to life. Be wary, because there are plenty of spoilers for “Short Second Life” after the jump, but click on to see the scenes we found most likely to be in “Eclipse.”

Probably in “Eclipse”: The newborns’ basement hide out

In “Short Second Life,” the newborn vampires are told a string of lies so Riley and Victoria can keep them under control easier, and one of them is that the sun will destroy any vampire that steps in it. Obviously, in Stephenie’s universe, we know this isn’t the case, and the worst affect the sun will have on a vampire is a blinding sparkle. Riley keeps the newborns in basements during the daytime so they can have a base to return to in order to stay out of the sun all day, and we’re sure that we’ll be seeing some scenes in there during the course of the film.

Already in “Eclipse”: Newborns ransacking Seattle

The first scene in “Short Second Life” follows Bree as she is out on a hunt with some of her fellow newborns. There’s Kevin and “Spider-man” (a blond whose name Bree doesn’t know), as well as Diego, who Bree ends up falling for. Kevin starts causing trouble and flips a car over so he can feed on its driver, and he and Spider-man start tearing the poor woman apart for her blood. Bree stands off to the side while they do this, full of thirst but not willing to fight the two of them for a slim amount of blood, and then she and Diego take off for better hunting. Fortunately, we’ve already seen a variation of this scene in a clip we got (a snapshot is taken from it above), and it turns out the Volturi were watching the newborns the whole time.

Probably in “Eclipse”: The Volturi confronting Victoria and Riley

Did you know that, despite Jane’s naïve claims at the end of “Eclipse” that Victoria and her army escaped Volturi attention, the Volturi actually knew the entire time? Probably, if you’ve seen the clip mentioned above. But, even worse than that, it turns out that the Volturi actually confront Victoria and let her continue her path of destruction because they want her to kill the Cullens! This scene almost shocked us more than it did the eavesdropping Bree and Diego in “Short Second Life,” and we’re betting our pennies that this new twist of events makes its way into “Eclipse.”

Already in “Eclipse”: Newborns following Riley through water

Turns out that chillingly awesome, George Romero-esque scene in the “Eclipse” trailer where the newborns walk through a body of water behind Riley is right out of “Short Second Life” too, on pages 117 and 118:

Riley paused at the water’s edge… He dove smoothly into the surf. The others were growling excitedly as they submerged, too… We didn’t swim long, and then we saw the others kicking upward. Fred and I [Bree] surfaced last, and Riley started talking as soon as our heads were out of the water.

Since we haven’t seen how the water scene fits into the context of “Eclipse” yet, we can’t tell if David Slade just took the visual from “Short Second Life” for the film or actually used the entire scene as well. In the novella, Riley is leading the newborns to a feeding frenzy on a nearby ferry, and that’s why they’re near water. However, in the trailer, it seems as though Riley is leading the newborns to the final battle with the Cullens, especially since they seem to be walking in the daytime, albeit under cloud cover. Still, the second we read that scene we knew exactly where we would be seeing its visual equivalent in the film.

Probably in “Eclipse”: Carlisle stopping Bree in the woods

We all know Carlisle and Edward team up to try to save Bree from her inevitable death at the hands of the Volturi, but what we don’t get to see in “Eclipse” from Bella’s perspective is the moment when Carlisle almost kills Bree himself, but then she surrenders and he chooses to let her “live.” This moment is, of course, in “Short Second Life,” and will most likely be included in the film to flesh out Bree’s final moments.

Hollywood Crush has a review of the new Stephenie Meyer book, The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner. As I am not finished with it yet, I haven’t read the review. But, if you have finished it and want to read and comment on their take on the book, here is your chance!

Expectations weren’t as high this time. It was like we were getting a surprise piece of chocolate with our dinner bill, not a complimentary dish of crème brulée. Still, “Twilight” fans haven’t had any new books to look forward to in almost two years, so we were excited and hopeful about “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner.” And I, at least, was not disappointed by the little novella. Pleasantly surprised, even.

As much as I was addicted to the “Twilight” saga, I wasn’t oblivious to its flaws. Stephenie Meyer could spend dozens of pages describing Bella doing her homework and making dinner, when we’d really rather skip to the vampire-werewolf drama going on outside. And as much as we’ve been drawn in by the heart-wrenching scenes between human and cold one, even those could get overwrought and repetitive. But here, in this 178-page little tale, Meyer has no time to get too gooey or bogged down in details. We’re dropped right into the bloody action.

Bree Tanner, a runaway who’s not sure if she reached her 16th birthday before Riley promised her a hamburger and turned her into a bloodthirsty killing machine instead, is probably one of the most tragic characters Meyer has ever created. Even as a super-strong vampire, she’s constantly in danger of being ripped apart and destroyed by the other newborns, whose complete savagery seems to be encouraged by the coven’s leaders.

Since we already know she dies at the end, we should be able to brace ourselves and not get too attached to the doomed girl. But as we get to know her, we can’t help hoping that maybe “Eclipse” got it wrong. At the beginning of the story, she’s offered a tiny glimmer of hope, a way out of the nonstop thirst and fear of her new life when a slightly older vampire Diego takes her under his wing. He’s not just an animal like the former gang members and junkies they’re forced to live with. And their mutual discovery that instead of burning to a crisp in the sun, they glitter like disco balls, is a touching moment that rivals the Bella-Edward meadow scene. It’s seriously torturous to watch Bree become enlightened, and even empowered, while also knowing that she’s days away from the end of this short second life.

Aside from an interesting character study, the story is also meant to give us a glimpse at the other side of the battle in “Eclipse.” SPOILERS AHEAD: The newborns have been lied to by Riley, manipulated into being dependent on him and scared to death to disobey any orders that have come down from “her” — because of the Cullens’ special powers, Victoria knows better than to let her army so much as think her name. They live like a band of directionless, homeless youth; which they are. And actually, the Cullens aren’t the only ones with special powers. Among the newborns is Freaky Fred, whose ability to repel everyone to the point that he’s invisible allows him to protect Bree and ultimately to escape the coven. How much would you love a little spin-off of Fred’s adventures in Vancouver now?

Three interesting revelations: 1) Victoria is aware of Alice’s ability to see the future, so it’s on purpose that she doesn’t make up her mind how to attack until the last minute. And, 2) Jane and her entourage actually visit Victoria and give her five days to enact her battle plan before the Volturi would destroy the newborn army. 3) As a surrendered Bree is being interrogated by Jane following the fight, she manages to figure out that Edward reads minds and conveys to him that the Volturi weren’t entirely on the Cullens’ side.

The battle scene itself is brief and confusing — we got more brutal detail from the newborns’ hunts. But if the point of this novella is to give a new perspective to a story we already know, I think “Bree Tanner” succeeded nicely. And I can’t wait to see how it comes into play when “Eclipse” makes it to the big screen in a few weeks.

There’s a new warning PC Tools issued this morning for fans of the very popular Twilight series. It concerns Stephenie Meyer’s upcoming novella, “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner” that will be available for free online June 7th at http://www.breetanner.com/

As the much anticipated novella hits, fans need to be aware of the harmful malware and viruses found on suspicious e-book download sites and “poisoned pdfs”. The growth of e-books usage has spawned increased cybercriminal activities from computers to mobile devices and e-readers.

PC Tools predicts that once the novella is available, cybercriminals will distribute it through Twilight fan sites and searches as a “Poisoned PDF.” They will exploit the online searches to find ways to infect computers with malware and new threats. Eager fans searching for early sneak peeks will also be targeted.

Cybercriminals are leveraging the viral nature of PDFs by inserting malware into a PDF’s Java Script. As Java Scripting makes PDF documents more engaging, it provides cybercriminals access into hacking your computer. Symantec recently reported that Poison PDF attacks skyrocketed in 2009 to represent 49 percent of web-based attacks.

Consumers need to run the latest security software to protect their computers and mobile devices.

Here are some tips they sent to keep you safe as well as some examples of previous attacks on Twilight fans:

FIVE WAYS TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM THE VAMPIRE BYTE!

• DON’T BE FOOLED BY FAKES – If a virus alert or book download site pops up on your computer screen, don’t click on it. Close the alert and run your antivirus software. In April Google reported on its analysis of 240 million web pages which uncovered over 11,000 domains involved in Fake AV distribution – about 15% of the malware domains detected on the web during a 13-month period.

• KNOW WHAT YOU’RE GETTING INTO – If you download a book, application or other types of files, save it on your computer and scan it before opening. Never click on the “run” program option.

• PROTECT YOURSELF FROM POISON – While PC Tools recommends only opening e-book PDF’s from people you trust, if you have to open a PDF file with your reader, make sure you disable the Java Script on your PDF reader since cybercriminals poison PDF’s by inserting the malware into a PDF’s Java Script

• STAY IN SAFE PLACES – Be careful of book download domains that are not .net or .com. International domains like those for Russia (.ru) are frequently used by cybercriminals wanting to avoid prosecution in the USA and UK. Also, stay away from torrents and other freeware sharing sites.

• X MARKS THE MALWARE – Be careful with links with an .exe suffix since .exe means an executable program that could be malware.

The following examples are past threats associated with Stephenie Meyer and Twilight related searches. PC Tools will provide new threat updates surrounding the upcoming release of “Eclipse” movie due out on June 30.

THE VAMPIRE BYTE SEARCH ENGINE SCAM

• This scam targeted users searching “Stephenie Meyer”
• A result for “Stephenie Meyer at 365Multimedia.com” returned with a description of “Stephenie Meyer interview on Twilight the movie starring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart”
• When clicked on, this link redirected users to a window informing them that they are infected with malware and they are then advised to download a phony antivirus software product to get rid of the infection.
• As Victims downloaded and installed the phony antivirus software they are asked for credit card information
• Malware was then installed on the user’s computer and any financial information entered is sent off to cybercriminals

THE STREAMVIEWER TWILIGHT SCAM
• Fans were baited with websites, chatrooms and blogs that read: “Watch New Moon Full Movie.” Concurrently, comment posts are filled with related keywords to attract more search engines.
• Search results for the movie then linked users to stolen images from the movie itself, convincing the fan that the movie is only one click away.
• When victims clicked on the “movie player” they were told to install a “streamviewer”
• The streamviewer, however, installed malware on the user’s computer
