Vampire vixen—and budding sex symbol—Ashley greene proves she’s a creature of the night in the season’s Gothy lace-and-fur regalia

In her now-immortal novel Twilight, Stephenie Meyer describes Alice Cullen, sister of tween dream Edward, as a “devastatingly, inhumanly beautiful” pixie vampire with “obsidian eyes” and an “exquisite, elfin face.” Most actors would rather not admit that casting decisions were based on anything other than their craft, but 23-year-old Ashley Greene—who brought Alice to life in The Twilight Saga: New Moon and this summer’s Eclipse and is signed on for next year’s Breaking Dawn—has no such illusions. “Yes, I’m very thankful that Stephenie Meyer wrote a character that I happen to look like,” says Greene with a laugh. Given the series’ rabid “Twihard” fan base—legions of whom were locked in long before the film’s first scene was shot—if Greene hadn’t been an eerily perfect fit for Alice, the filmmakers would have heard about it. “The fans were already there,” Greene says. “Before they knew Ashley Greene, they knew Alice Cullen, and they all had an idea of how she looked.”

The Jacksonville, Florida, native was still hostessing at the Belmont, a bar and restaurant in Los Angeles, when she got the call about Twilight auditions in 2007. Since then, she says, “I’ve gone from zero to 60.” For Greene, like costars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, and Anna Kendrick, the vampire phenom has been “more than a big break,” she says. “Every one of us is working like a maniac!”

Though she may be a newbie, Greene is navigating her exploding career with beyond-her-years maturity. “As much as I adore being part of Twilight, I don’t want it to define me,” she says. That means launching a cross-genre attack on the industry, starting with next year’s psychological thriller The Apparition, in which she stars opposite Sebastian Stan (Gossip Girl’s crafty Carter Baizen) as one half of a college couple terrorized by a “presence” conjured in a university experiment. Greene is also testing her comedic powers, joining Olivia Wilde, Hugh Jackman, and Jennifer Garner in the ensemble comedy Butter, which is based on a real-life Midwestern pastime: butter carving. “My character’s father [Ty Burrell] is, like, the Elvis of butter carving in this small town—he is the god,” Greene says.

Sex symbol is yet another role Greene has been exploring of late, causing red-carpet ripples in sleek, body-conscious dresses by Dolce & Gabbana, L’Wren Scott, and Antonio Berardi. “There’s something about being a woman, being appealing, and being sexy and feeling good about yourself,” Greene says. With fictionworthy looks and a career in warp speed, she should know.

Volturi Banner(1) The Twilight Saga: Eclipse stars appear all over the country to greet fans at local screenings

This weekend, the cast of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse was very, very busy jet-setting across the country to visit local cinema showings of the film.

Slowly, the cities and specific locations for the appearances were revealed, but the castmembers making appearances for the events were kept a secret for the most part.

The appearances took place on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

On Friday, the cities whose fans got to see the cast were Chicago (Julia Jones), Kansas City (Gil Birmingham), Las Vegas (Kiowa Gordon), Los Angeles (Dakota Fanning), Minneapolis (Charlie Bewley), Nashville (Tinsel Korey), Orange County (Justin Chon), Vancouver (Tyson Houseman), and Washington, D.C (Christian Serratos).

You can see a photo of and mini-interview with Julia Jones in Chicago here. Meanwhile, Gil Birmingham’s Facebook page has its own set of photos from his appearance, and a local news station (KMBC) interviewed Birmingham from the event. Photos from Gordon’s appearance in Las Vegas can be found here and here, and Tinsel Korey tweeted about her showing in Nashville (Christian Serratos did the same for her appearance in D.C.). More on Houseman’s appearance in Vancouver can be found here, and the O.C. Register has quite a few photos of Justin Chon in Orange County here.

ashley greene Ashley Greene on Alice

Movies.com: I remember back when we met for the first Twilight film, and you talking about loving the character and doing her justice for the fans. How much of the character is yours now, three films in?
Ashley Greene: In general I always try to break characters down in the most basic form, being a human being – or having human characteristics, in Alice’s case. So if I’ve experienced anything in my life that is similar to them, I try to connect to that and I really kind of become this character.

With Alice, I definitely tried to stay optimistic like she does. And of course I love fashion! She loves fashion. For the family aspect of it, I’m extremely close to my family, as is she. So that was an easy connection. It wasn’t that big of a stretch. If someone messes with Alice’s family she’ll go to bat for them, and I’m the same way for my family.

Movies.com: With everything good that’s come from Twilight’s success, do you feel like you’ll have to overcome the popularity of the movies, to some degree, to establish your own cachet?
Greene:I will say that that will be the only kind of downfall – not being a part of Twilight, but just the instant fame, the “just out of water” fame. Everyone now knows who we are, but they only know this one thing that we can do. And so everyone is going, “Okay, is this the flavor of the week, or is this girl serious and is she here to stay?” I think, though, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. For the next five years I’d say that I do have something to prove. I’m going to have fun doing it.

Movies.com: Everyone’s had crazy fan-encounter stories. But do you also have a particularly special one where someone really impacted you?
Greene: Yeah. There’s one fan in particular who I’ve apparently inspired, and I’ve met her, I think, three times now. And she made me a scrapbook of my career and my life in Hollywood, which was really special to me. Especially now during this saga –this is a time of my life that I don’t think I’m ever going to forget, and I love that I now have this memory book that someone took the time to create for me. So that was really special to me. Then she wrote this letter with it and she was very sweet. It was very incredible that she did that!

Movies.com: What do you think about you and your character having that kind of impact?
Greene: It’s important to me that I’m very actively trying to be involved in young girls’ lives, because I think it’s important for them to know what they can do, what they can achieve. Some people don’t have people telling them that. My family was very supportive. Growing up my whole life, my mom was telling me how incredible and special I was and that I was going to change the world. I think it’s important for girls to know that they can change the world, that they do have an impact.
