Excerpts from the new article on the wolfpack’s Meraz, Korey, Spencer, and Jones in InStyle Magazine

“It feels like family.”
According to Alex Meraz, a 25-year-old who appears in the upcoming third installment of the blockbuster Twilight series, the actors who play the so-called “Wolf Pack”—a group of American Indian shape-shifters—became as close as their characters almost as soon as they arrived on set. “We really rely on each other for support,” he said. “It feels like family.” His co-stars Tinsel Korey, 30, Chaske Spencer, 35, and Julia Jones, 29, agreed: “I felt, kind of instantly, like we had so much in common,” Jones said. Being in an intensely-hyped Twilight flick, she explained, “is a really specific kind of experience. We all feel we’re in the same boat.”

“This is you. This is your role.”
The Eclipse casting directors weren’t the first to think Jones, a part-time model and Columbia graduate, was perfect for the part of Leah, the only female wolf. “One of my closest friends read the books before the first movie came out,” she reported, “and she always said, ‘This is going to be you. This is your role.’” Nevertheless, Jones admits to some trepidation about taking on Twilight. “Everybody has an idea of who the character is in their mind, and there’s no way I’m going to be that person for everyone,” she explained. “I just have to hope that the way I bring Leah to life wins people over.”

“Twilight’s a star-maker.”
All four of the actors reported that getting cast in a Twilight flick has already had a transformative effect on their careers: Alex Meraz recently nabbed a starring role in the new film from Kids auteur Larry Clark, and Julia Jones’s next movie is the big-budget video game adaptation Jonah Hex. “It’s a star-maker,” Spencer said of the series. “It’s definitely opened a lot of doors.”

Interview with a Wolfpack

53567144 Interview with a Wolfpack

The LA Times interviewed 3 members of the Twilight Saga wolfpack (Alex Meraz, Julia Jones, Chaske Spencer) about their role in the upcoming movie Eclipse and more:

“The Cullens are very reserved,” said Alex Meraz, who plays Wolf Pack member Paul. “They’re vampires, but they’re not out killing people. They’re not what they’re meant to be. Whereas the Wolf Pack, we’re through and through animals. We’re frisky. We’re fun. There’s something sexy about that.”

In the third installment of the franchise, the band of brotherly (and sisterly, as we’ll see) hirsute creatures joins forces with its rivals, the Cullens, after Seattle is plagued by a series of killings caused by an army of newborn vampires.

But since their computer-generated alter egos seem to be getting most of the screen time, here’s a chance to get to know the actors pre-transformation:

Alex Meraz (Paul)

At 25, Meraz is still adjusting to the whirlwind that comes with being in a blockbuster franchise. But don’t be fooled. He’s not complaining.

“Bring it on,” he said. “I was working really hard before, and it just didn’t seem to pay off. I’m just really grateful for it all.”

Before he caught the acting “virus,” Meraz — who admitted his first viewing of “Twilight” was a bootleg version — demonstrated his artistic tendencies through dance, martial arts and painting. In fact, he still breaks out the paint and brushes to maintain his sanity through all the “Twilight” pandemonium.

But it’s that pandemonium that gets him amped when talking about the movie.

“The fans are going to love this film,” he said. “I didn’t get my chance to touch anybody in ‘New Moon.’ This time I go at it with Emmett [ Kellan Lutz]. I give him a nice bitch slap. But I’m in wolf form, so maybe it’s a big paw slap?

“Oh, and there’s a lot more action. It’s more Paul wolf. You’re going to see my wolf form doing a lot of stuff. You’ll just see me running around shirtless once and a while.”

So what of all those topless scenes?

“I have a new found respect for women. I have to keep my figure. Girls are telling me to take my shirt off. It’s like, ‘Hello! I’m a person, too!’ “

ClevverTV talked with Twilight’s Chaske Spencer on the set of his public service announcement for Shift The Power To the People. The goal of the PSA is to raise awareness for the recent storms that have devastated the people of South Dakota leaving over 9000 people without heat, power, water or food. Chaske asks that you call your congressmen and senators to request support.

Joslyn tries hard to get Chaske to talk about Twilight!  They do discuss the wolf pack, working out, Taylor Lautner, and touches generally on Eclipse and New Moon.  Chaske says he is really curious what David Slade will come up with for Eclipse.

You can watch the PSA, with so many of the Twilight cast in it, at the end of the interview. Cast members involved include Chaske Spencer, Julia Jones, Gil Birmingham, Boo Boo Stewart, Alex Meraz and Justin Chon. Go to the link below for more information.

Radar Online has a very nice interview with Julia Jones, a.k.a.  Leah Clearwater.  Unfortunately you have to go to their site to watch it, but it is good enough that I recommend you do that.  In it, Julia shops for sunglasses for the cast’s Christmas presents and chats about each as she shops.  She discusses the family dynamic on the set and goes a bit into how the breakup between Leah and Sam will play in Eclipse. Very sweet.

Julia Jones Interview – Part One

Lime Life has an exclusive interview with Julia Jones (aka Leah Clearwater) where she talks about her character and ‘Eclipse’.

bip2s2 273x300 Julia Jones Interview Part One

Here is Part One of the interview:

World, meet Julia Jones. Julia is one of the most sought-after new additions to the Twilight cast, having just wrapped filming for Eclipse. Jones plays the complex role of Leah Clearwater, the scorned and lonely female in the La Push werewolf pack.

A 28-year-old, Ivy-educated Boston native, Julia Jones spoke exclusively with LimeLife upon returning to Los Angeles from the Eclipse sets in Vancouver. Here we kick off a highly-coveted two-week series where she shares the shocking story behind landing the part of Leah, the ways your life transforms when you’ve starred in the biggest film franchise in the world, and the inside truth about Twilight cast relationships.

Twilight and LimeLife fans, get in…

LimeLife: Julia, you’ve just played this amazing role in Eclipse and we can’t wait to hear about it. First though, can you tell us from where else we might know you?

Julia Jones: Probably the most notable thing was that I did a recurring role on ER. I appeared in their final season [as Dr. Kaya Montoya], so it was pretty cool to be a part of something that great and large as it was closing. Everybody was appreciating it, so it was a good time to be involved.

LimeLife: We heard that there were open casting calls for Eclipse. How exactly did you score the part of Leah Clearwater?

Julia Jones: The casting director I’ve had a relationship with for a number of years. She actually just called us up and I went in and auditioned for the director David Slade and for her, and came back about a week later and read for some people from Summit and David again and some of the producers. And then I waited for about a month before I heard anything, and you’re right, in that time they were doing huge casting calls and going up to Canada. I think they accepted tapes from anybody so really anyone in the world could put themselves on tape and potentially be seen by the casting people.

LimeLife: Okay, so basically you were tapped on the shoulder to audition for the biggest cinema craze of our time. What kind of relationship did you have with the Twilight series at that time?

Julia Jones: It’s interesting because I hadn’t read any of the books before I got the audition. I of course was aware of it, I have good friends who have been – I think “obsessed” is the right word – for quite some time. (Laughs.) Then when I got the call for the audition, I actually had a very serious visceral reaction. My heart started beating fast, it’s a very unusual thing but I think on some level I think I sort of felt like I knew that this was going to be something important and probably life-changing.

LimeLife: Julia, you were cast with a pretty dynamic and somewhat complex character. Can you tell us about Leah Clearwater?

Julia Jones: Yeah, totally. First of all she’s the only werewolf who’s a female, which is in itself a very cool thing, but she has this complicated backstory where she is heartbroken because the head of the pack Sam Uley left her for her best friend and her cousin. So in addition to that she’s dealing with all the changes that you have in your body when you become a wolf, and as a girl there’s really nobody who knows what’s happening to her – she’s really alone and out there and heartbroken at the same time. And it makes her very angry and mean, and really she’s just in a lot of pain and she doesn’t know how to ask for help so she lashes out.

LimeLife: What did you bring to Leah’s character? Did you relate to her?

Julia Jones: The heartbreak is a very universal emotion and most of us have felt that – I have. So that was clearly part of it. But also just being so caught up in what’s going on in your world emotionally that you can’t connect to the outside world, that’s something that’s a hard thing. Anytime you go through something dark and painful, it makes you want to just withdraw from the world, except you can’t. I explored what that’s like a lot when I was preparing.

One of the fun things that I got to bring to her was just being a tomboy and hanging out with the boys. I was always a huge tomboy growing up and I was always competing. I was the only girl in my football league, and they were so mean to me! (Laughs). And so a lot of that was easy to draw on.
