Our friends at QuileuteWolfPack.com have an exclusive interview with Alez Meraz and we are happy to bring it to you. Written by Sprucey, the QWP rep in Australia, the interview took place during Alex’s visit to Brisbane. It is an article that looks more closely at Alex – who he is as an artist/actor/person and a glimpse into his thoughts and the filming of New Moon.

During Alex Meraz’s weekend in Brisbane, Australia, I was privileged enough to spend some time with him and his wife. I had the chance to get the low-down on Alex’s inspirations and his experiences preparing for his role in Savage Innocent and New Moon, his time in Australia, and on the set of New World- all exclusive to QuileuteWolfPack.com.

Alex Meraz is well known for his multitude of talents, which makes him an inspiration for thousands of people. But who inspires Alex? Alex tells that he admires people who go through a physical change for their work. He comments that actors like Tom Hardy are the kind of people he aspires to work with. Tom Hardy, lead actor of the British-made Bronson, went under a major physical transformation which included gaining 42 pounds (or 20 kilos) of muscle. Alex comments that he would love to work with Alejandro González Iñárritu, who is best known as the director for Babel, but Alex recalls his other great, but generally unknown, movies such as 21 grams and 11’09’01- September 11.

However, New Moon is now a universally recognized film, and Alex has taken a part of that home with him…literally. Alex made sure he secured himself a souvenir (or several) while on the set of New Moon. Alex laughs as he explains that when he was onset he worried that the production team would mix up his ‘picture-underwear’ with everyone else’s (picture-underwear is the underwear they have to wear while filming). Alex got so anxious over it that he took the underwear home each day instead of returning them to the production team. When he came back the next day he denied any knowledge of the picture-underwear’s whereabouts. He would watch them open a fresh packet of picture-underwear for him each day; just to make sure it wasn’t anyone else’s underwear. He laughs as he tells that he now has a drawer full of official New Moon picture-underwear at home.

The way he got to New Moon, Alex says, is unconventional. He followed no Actor 101 guidelines that Hollywood stars live by- he lived in Arizona (not LA), he auditioned by video (not in person) and he got the agent, manager and publicist all after he got the big gig of New Moon. Alex tells that he didn’t actually audition to be Paul at all. He auditioned for Sam, while Chaske auditioned for Jared, Bronson for Embry, and Kiowa for Paul. It wasn’t until Chris Weitz had a visionary dream in the middle of the night that he pieced together the actors with the different characters. It becomes obvious why Alex is such a big believer in destiny. Alex describes it as a “backward process”. Nevertheless, Alex now anticipates filming for Breaking Dawn, which he agrees should be split into 2 movies. Alex is only now trying to bulk up again after plans to film Savage Innocent this season fell through. Savage Innocent follows the sad story of a child who suffers a hard childhood, and is found by a family. The director, Larry Clark, is well known for other shocking stories, such as 1995’s film Kids. Alex comments that his character is suppose to be a frail, lean man who has spent a lot of time in a basement. To perfect this role, Alex explains that he had to lose 30 pounds which meant he had to drop the muscle he gained for New Moon and Eclipse.

Alex tweeted that he had to grow his beard and nails out, as well as going on major weight loss diets. Now that production for Savage Innocent is at a stand still Alex has chosen to regain all his lost weight and muscle for the much anticipated finale to the Twilight Saga.

On the topic of much anticipated: Alex has been twitter-happy about coming to Australia. He tweeted a friendly three times about coming to Australia and a further three times while he was here. Although he likes humid weather (strange man) he packed for a chilly Australian autumn. I’m sure that Alex was happily surprised when he found that Brisbane had pleasant weather. Alex probably wasn’t as equally joyful when he realized that all Australian cities weren’t based on a beautiful white beach, like he anticipated. Alex did learn two things about Australia on his weekend here. The first thing was the way Aussie’s say “yeah”. He tried to adopt it over the weekend by saying “yeeeeeeah” in all his Q&A sessions. The other thing Alex learned was that Australians really do eat kangaroo, which he says he wanted to try.

To get heretoday, Alex remembers back to his first film that initially pushed him into the spotlight- not New Moon, but New World. On the threshold of his 20’s, Alex comments about how quiet and meek he was on set with world class actors such as Collin Farrell and Christian Bale. After the camera stopped rolling, he would quietly just stand there until further directions. This is different from the free spirited, boisterous and energetic Alex we know today, huh? It’s because of men like Collin Farrell and Christian Bale, Alex says, who tried to make him feel at ease, from throwing his arm freely around Alex, to simply buying Alex a drink. However, there was two pieces of advice that Christian and Collin gave Alex, both of which Alex has obviously kept in mind to maintain level-headedness in Hollywood. The first was “Not to take yourself too seriously,” which Alex does apply with his hilarious and embarrassing shenanigans on twitter, including dressing up as a woman, posing in his Spongebob PJs, getting a speeding ticket, a dog sniffing his crotch, sleeping on the job, being rejected on Valentine’s Day, locking himself in an optometrist’s bathroom, and being mistaken for a yard worker.

Then, suddenly, Alex comes out with deep thoughts like “you are what your deep driving desire is, as your desire is your will, as your will is your deed, as your deed is your destiny,” and “you are not a human being having a spiritual experience, you are a spiritual being having a human experience,” which brings me to the last piece of advice that Christian and Collin left Alex, and that Alex now leaves us with:

“Be a student of life”

My daughter and I attended the Twi/Tour in Phoenix this weekend and it was a blast. While some of the big names couldn’t make it, the stars who did come were funny and enthusiastic. I could not tape the question and answer session, but I’ll give you some of the flavor. Actors speaking include Michael Welsh, Edi Gathegi, Gil Birmingham, Alex Meraz, and Chaske Spencer.

Mike Welsh was the first star on stage. Asked which vampire he would like to be, he answered James. Was it scripted to pull his chair out from under him in the cafeteria? No, Catherine threw that in. Of the cast and their friendship? Summit made the choice to pick unknown actors and so we’re all going on this crazy journey together. Oh and by the way, they are going to make Breaking Dawn. (Says Mr. Welsh.) They’d be stupid not to… as long as you guys keep showing up. By November, you are not going to be going, “I’m over it.” Mike then very graciously thank us fans for taking him on this ride that is Twilight.

Edi Gathegi was up next. His favorite scene in Twilight is the ballet room fight. In New Moon, the meadow, of course and the Volturi scene is very good. “You are going to like that!”, says Edi. As to if he was PO’d about dying in New Moon, he says that no, he is blessed to have been in the first two movies. “My glass is half full. I miss them playing in Vamp Camp!” (Edi watched New Moon with Stephenie Meyer while in Phoenix) Thoughts on New Moon? “I don’t think anyone is not going to love it. I predict a whole new onslaught of Twilight guys!

The Quileutes were next, and they were a riot! First question up? Alex, boxers or briefs? His answer? I switch it up, it depends what I am doing. What do you have on now? Right now? Briefs. Then, Gil grabs his pant top and looks and yells out “baby blue.” (This is what started the crazed twittering from CBA. I scribled down what they were saying, my daughter texted it to Kim and Kim tweeted! If only the wifi had worked in the ballroom!) Alex and Chaske get him back for that by bringing up a Dianna Ross music video on u-tube called “Muscles”, in which Gil does cartwheels and shows some muscle. (Here’s the link to Muscles!)
How does Alex like the crazy world of Twilight? This is a great world right here. he says of the audience. I love you. I like the bond with the audience. In New Moon we were in a bubble (and didn’t see all the frenzy.) Was Alex always interested in acting? “No, I went to the New School for Arts in Scottsdale, AZ to paint, then worked at Whole Foods. I still paint and dance.”
Does Gil get a long with Taylor? “I met him at 16. He was such a sweet kid. One year later, who the hell are you? He is HOT. That is not something a father should not say about his son.”
Chaske and Alex had to keep their parts secret for a month. When the photo of the wolf pack leaving together from a restaurant was leaked, Summit had to tell about them being cast. Chaske and Gil were old friends and Chaske revealed to Gil he was cast in an “untitled sports movie” in Vancouver. Gil simply told him “Good! See you there.”
Chaske then told a story about Alex’s improvisational acting skills in which, in the scene where Paul almost attacks Bella, Alex decided to grab her neck when she screams. Apparently everyone gasped when he grabbed Kristen. Chris Weitz just said, “Let’s try to keep the intensity inside!”
Gil’s thoughts on Billy Black? He is the gate keeper –the Keeper of the Stories. Of Taylor’s fame now? Gil-”I don’t know I would want the celebrity of Taylor. He can’t walk the streets.”
Do the musicians in the cast jam together? Alex-”Jackson invited me to Kristen’s room with Rob and some others all jamming out. I couldn’t understand what Rob was singing but it sounded good.” Alex proceeded to imitate Rob’s singing style.
What is Alex’s workout routine? “Howl at the moon and run on all fours.”
Chaske– Leah or Emily? “Emily. There will be all kinds of rumors now.”

This is kind of amazing. Here’s a video clip of San Diego Comic-Con “Twilight” madness. For those who hadn’t heard, there were some special screenings of “Twilight” in San Diego during the show. Kellan Lutz, Peter Facinelli and Taylor Lautner all showed up to surprise the crowd at one of those screenings and the results are… well, they’re pretty astonishing. I love the cute bit at the end with the little kid named Jacob in a “Twi”-branded BK hat.

Do any of you ever wonder if the “Twilight” cast members wear earplugs for their public appearances? You Twilighters do worshipful shrieking better than any fanbase I’ve ever encountered. And I’ve seen Phish. Big ups for that.

Quoting Bower: I play Caius, who is the leader of the Volturi. They are a coven and effectively run the vampire community. They make the laws up. It’s me, Michael Sheen who plays Aro, and a guy called Christopher Heyerdahl who plays Marcus. We try to kill Bella and convince Edward to come and live with us — because Peter’s character [Carlisle Cullen] had come and lived with us before — and we love the Cullens deeply.

Christopher Heyerdahl, was interviewed by Sci-Fi wire magazine about the Twilight sequel New Moon and his character ‘Marcus’:

“He’s one of the oldest vampires on the planet, and who doesn’t want to play a 3,000-year-old vampire?” Heyerdahl said. “The cast that I get to work with, like Michael Sheen. … We had so much fun goofing off together. It was an absolute hoot. Director Chris Weitz’s version for this piece is like a Renaissance painting. The images were absolutely beautiful, and the character is such a tragic old fellow.”

He mentions that he is contracted for the “final chapter”, Breaking Dawn:

Marcus also plays an important role in the fourth Twilight novel, although Heyerdahl hasn’t peeked that far ahead yet. “I have left that book alone,” he confirms. “I want to leave it until we get closer to the movie. I was talking to Stephenie about it, and she asked if I had read the final book. I said ‘Nope, I don’t want to read it yet. I want to leave it alone until we get there.’ ‘Oh, just you wait. You’ll love it.’ I do know generally what happens, since it is impossible not to find out. And, yes, I’ve been contracted for the final chapter.”

Amanda Bell over at the Examiner has a great article discussing the perks of being a Twilighter in France and also some cast interviews from the Berlin Twilight Fan Event.

Our friends at Twilight FanZone have updated us to say that the Twilight DVD will be released in France on July 8th, 2009, and that SND Films (the French distributor) will be putting the famous “red apple” on the cover of the DVD. “This exclusivity is granted to France,” they say. Continue they, “[s]ome stores will open at midnight, with Twilight gifts for the first 2,000 buyers: a Twilight mobile phone, jewelry, or an autographed poster.” Further information on the event is available at their site.

So you say that you don’t have MTV and are worried about missing the premiere of the New Moon trailer??  Fear not!  MySpace Trailer Park is reporting that they will also be releasing the trailer at 7:45pm Pacific time, 10:45m Eastern time.  This will be 1 hour, 45 minutes into the awards show itself.

I don’t know about anyone else, but when I went on MySpace to catch the final Twilight trailer it took forever as the server was so loaded.  My advice:  Get logged in early!

Charlie Bewley as Demetri

Charlie Bewley, maybe a new team needed? Speculations are going about a Team Demetri at least. We don’t know much about this man; he seems to be very new to the industry and seems to have been picked for the cast rather for his nice looks. We can’t say too much more as we don’t know anything about his acting skills, but I’m quite sure that he is talented.

Daniel Cudmore as Felix

Daniel is big, very big, and is a real hunk. We have seen him in previous roles such as Colossus in ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ and ‘Alone in the Dark’. We know from the books that Felix is big and doesn’t have any extra ordinary power, but as Emmet, he is very strong. And Daniel will be able to mirror that very well.

Christopher Heyerdahl as Marcus

Now Christopher is a scary dude. He is tall and has a lot of roles as the “bad guy”. We know him mostly from TV shows such as ‘Stargate: Atlantis’ and ‘Sanctuary’ but we have also seen him in movie’s as ‘Blade: Trinity’ and ‘The Chronicles of Riddick’. In New Moon he will be playing one of the Volturi leaders known as Marcus. Marcus has the special gift of sensing the strength behind relationships. Marcus becomes surprised with the strength behind Edwards and Bella’s union.

Cameron Bright as Alec

Cameron is an interesting young actor. He is only 16 years old already has a big CV of movies behind him. We have seen him in movies such as ‘Ultraviolet’, ‘Thank you for smoking’ and ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’. In New Moon Cameron will be playing the brother of Jane, Alec. Alec is known for his ability to end a person’s sensory abilities, so that the one being targeted with his ability won’t be able to feel anything at all. In New Moon Alec is supposed to look a lot like Jane and being able to look scary. Cameron with his skills in acting can defiantly bring that to the table.

Michael Sheen as Aro

Michael is the one that is more known then the other new cast members. With 40 years of age he has done a lot of roles and with such charisma and screen presence. Michael really knows how to fill out a role and has in every movie really done all in his power to make a great role. We have seen Michael in movies such as ‘Frost/Nixon’, ‘Blood Diamond’, ‘The Queen’ and ironically as it can seem, we also saw him in the Underworld movies as the werewolf leader Lucian. And now, in New Moon we will see him as the gracious Volturi leader known as Aro, a favorite character for many fans out there. Aro has the ability to read minds, something similar to what Edward can do; the only difference is that Aro need’s to touch the one he wants to read the mind from. But that’s not enough; Edward can only hear what a person is thinking right now, Aro can pick out everything that a person has thought of or has detailed in his mind. Michaels looks and ability to act is definitely a winning concept of playing Aro in New Moon.

Jamie Campbell Bower as Caius

Jamie put up a lot of fuzz in the fan community when he announced he would be
playing Caius in New Moon. People not seeing Caius just so young, but with makeup,
wigs and lenses, he will definitely look like the Caius I was expecting. Jamie who is mostly known for his role in the musical movie ‘Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’ as Anthony will have some big shoes to fill while playing the erratical Volturi leader Caius. Caius has no special ability, when he moves it appears as if he is floating. Jamie’s great acting skills will hopefully prove a lot of fans wrong.

Noot Seer as Heidi

Noot Seer is not only a model, she is most utterly beautiful. With her long legs and long hair, she will definitely be able to fill the shoes of Heidi, the beautiful hunter for the Volturi. The role is not big, but it is an essential part in the book, where Bella sees Heidi bringing all these people down for the Volturi to feed.

Graham Greene as Harry Clearwater

Graham is a great actor, and is of Oneida Indian decent. Graham has over a 100 movies under his belt and is a great actor, mostly known for his roles in the movies ‘Dances with wolves’, ‘The Green Mile’ and the mini-series ‘Into the West’. In New Moon we will see him appearing as Harry Clearwater, father of Seth and Leah, which are more essential characters for Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. Although Grahams role in New Moon won’t be that big, it is still very essential for the storyline.

Tinsel Korey as Emily

Tinsel is an actress and a singer/songwriter. Tinsel is of Indian decent just as the rest of the wolf-pack. Tinsel is mostly known for her role in the movie ‘The Lookout’ and the mini-series ‘Into the West’. She is also known for her music. In New Moon she will be playing Emily, Sam’s love that he imprinted upon. She is an essential role for the wolf-pack as she is the one practically taking care of them all. Tinsel is a great actress and will be just perfect for the role as Emily.
