Dearest Stacie,

Thank you for being such a big part of this community and being so passionate, wonderful and lovely! CBA would be very different (and much more boring) without your comments, devotion and love for all things Rob/Edward.

May all your wishes come true – today and every day that follows!

Look, Rob’s singing “Happy Birthday”!

So here I am, challenging YOU this week! Tell us in the comments – which is YOUR recommendation? The ONE story you want everyone else to read, the one which holds your heart like no other! Give us link, rating, summary and your reason for putting it as number 1 on your list of favourites!

Instead of a Monday Fanfiction Recommendation

Dear All,

I don’t really have an amazing story to recommend this week (I’m in the process of reading one, but I’d rather finish before I post it here). However, today I found something very interesting and well written (5 years ago!), which made me think about what this means to all of us. By “this” I mean all of it – the site, the books, the movies, the actors, the obsession. You name it, I mean it. :)

Share opinions in the comments section. It’d be lovely to read your thought on this.

The following post is property of hesychasm and can be found on her livejournal profile. No copyright infringement intended.

Fandom is focus. Fandom is obsession. Fandom is insatiable consumption. Fandom is sitting for hours in front of a TV screen a movie screen a computer screen with a comic book a novel on your lap. Fandom is eyestrain and carpal tunnel syndrome and not enough exercise and staying up way, way past your bedtime.

Fandom is people you don’t tell your mother you’re meeting. Fandom is people in the closet, people out and proud, people in costumes, people in T-shirts with slogans only fifty others would understand. Fandom is a loud dinner conversation scaring the waiter and every table nearby.

Fandom is you in Germany and me in the US and him in Australia and her in Japan. Fandom is a sofabed in New York, a roadtrip to Oxnard, a friend behind a face in London. Fandom talks past timezones and accents and backgrounds. Fandom is conversation. Communication. Contact.

Fandom is drama. Fandom is melodrama. Fandom is high school. Fandom is Snacky’s law and Godwin’s law and Murphy’s law. Fandom is smarter than you. Fandom is stupider than you. Fandom is five arguments over and over and over again. Fandom is the first time you’ve ever had them.

Fandom is female. Fandom is male. Fandom lets female play at being male. Fandom bends gender, straight, gay, prude, promiscuous. Fandom is fantasy. Fandom doesn’t care about norms or taboos or boundaries. Fandom cares too much about norms and taboos and boundaries. Fandom is not real life. Fandom is closer than real life. Fandom knows what you’re really like in the bedroom. Fandom is how you would never, could never be in the bedroom.

Fandom is shipping, never shipping, het, slash, gen, none of the above, more than the above. Fandom is love for characters you didn’t create. Fandom is recreating the characters you didn’t create. Fandom is appropriation, subversion, dissention. Fandom is adoration, extrapolation, imitation. Fandom is dissection, criticism, interpretation. Fandom is changing, experimenting, attempting.

Fandom is creating. Fandom is drawing, painting, vidding: nine seasons in four minutes of love. Fandom is words, language, authoring. Fandom is essays, stories, betas, parodies, filks, zines, usenet posts, blog posts, message board posts, emails, chats, petitions, wank, concrit, feedback, recs. Fandom is writing for the first time since you were twelve. Fandom is finally calling yourself a writer.

Fandom is signal and response. Fandom is a stranger moving you to tears, anger, laughter. Fandom is you moving a stranger to speak.

Fandom is distraction. Fandom is endangering your job, your grades, your relationships, your bank account. Fandom gets no work done. Fandom is too much work. Fandom was/is just a phase. Fandom could never be just a phase. Fandom is where you found a friend, a sister, a kindred spirit. Fandom is where you found a talent, a love, a reason.

Dearest Rachelle!

On behalf of all of us here at CBA (editors and readers alike), I want to wish you a very wonderful, magical day! Much love from all of us! :)

I’m going to borrow the words of Neil Gaiman:

“May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you’re wonderful, and don’t forget to make some art — write or draw or build or sing or live as only you can. And I hope, somewhere in the next year, you surprise yourself.”

10 Love Lessons Learned From the Twilight Saga

5681188895 22fd84100c 300x202 10 Love Lessons Learned From the Twilight Saga

Written By: Donna Cullen

The Twilight books and movies have been a hit with all age groups and both male and female genders. Their romantic tales have intrigued many, but the teenage generation, especially. There are several lessons about romantic relationships that are presented through the series, whether or not those lessons are true to live or not, I’ll let you be the judge.

  1. Long distance relationships never work. Edward was so sure that their love could handle the separation. It may often seem like that, when a couple first becomes separated by distance, but over time, the lack of shared experience will take its toll. Long distance relationships are very hard to maintain for long periods of time.
  2. Love at first sight is real. Edward never really notices any other girl at his school after first seeing Bella. That was all it took, that ‘first sight’ of the one he was meant to be with.
  3. Love has no prejudice. When you’re really in love, you can see past all of the outward differences between two people, even when those differences are of a human and a vampire.
  4. Jealousy is a killer. The green-eyed monster, as jealousy has been referred to, showed itself in these stories between Jacob and Edward. Jacob’s jealousy aroused more than a little animosity towards his rival.
  5. Love is more than skin deep. Belle and Edward were not simply attracted to each other because of their physical looks. Edward enjoyed everything about Belle. He liked talking with her, because she was intelligent and had a strong personality. He admired her as much as he loved her. The same was true of Belle’s appreciation for Edward.
  6. When you really love someone, you can’t live without them. When Edward thought that Bella was dead he was going to expose himself. Bella felt the same way when Edward leaves in New Moon. Belle wanted to become a vampire, so that she would be able to be with Edward forever.
  7. Your best friend can’t be of the opposite sex. Belle thought that she and Jacob could just be best friends and not get romantically involved. Since Belle was already in love with Edward, it was true for her, but not for Jacob. The more he was with Belle, the more in love with her, he became.
  8. Love doesn’t care about other people’s opinion. Edward and Bella had to face the judgement of the other students and their friends. Their love for each other was able to sustain them through those experiences. They were able to see beyond the surface things that others saw.
  9. Love is self-sacrificing. Edward was willing to sacrifice his own desires for the well-being of Belle. He was willing to put her desires before his own. Her happiness and well-being were of more importance to him than his own.
  10. Love can totally change your perspective. Bella was so sure that moving to Forks was going to make her miserable, but after she meets Edward, she feels like she never wants to leave. Your feelings are powerful things, and being with someone you love can make all the difference in the world towards your perspective on your other circumstances.

Some of the ‘lessons’ learned through the series should be taken to heart. But others, well, they make for good romance stories but are seldom what you truly experience in real life. It usually takes a few decades of living to learn the difference, so if you want to know which ones are for real and which ones are not, ask someone whose been living life for a bit longer than you have.

Monday Fanfiction Recommendation: “Serendipity” by Suzie55

Serendipity Monday Fanfiction Recommendation: Serendipity by Suzie55

Serendipity by Suzie55

Rated: M –  Romance/Drama  - Words: 29,438  - Edward & Bella

30 Chapters in 30 Days – a story started & completed in April 2011.First Love, True Love, Lost Love, Second Chances, Eternal Love. “Their fate was sealed. There would never be another for him and as she lay in his arms she told him the same.

Why you should read it: Suzie is one of my friends in this fandom, I love talking to her on Twitter and reading her stories. But that’s not why she’s my recommendation this Monday, I take fanfiction way too seriously to do that. Suzie stories are always written well, intriguing and unlike many others that you just read and forget, they stay with you. “Serendipity” in particular is written like many stories these days – one or more updates every day, small but frequent bits that keep you on your toes. Unlike the stories that update with long chapters once every couple of weeks, this new approach seems to be quite popular in the fandom and it works really well!  This is why I’m not recommending a complete story – try out how this one works, I promise you’ll look forward to it every day and you’ll like it! :)

“Serendipity” is both a heart-breaking and a heart-warming story. It’s about love lost and found,  the perseverance to fight for your beloved, the hope that always burns like a flame even in the most desperate heart. Edward loses Bella but he knows she’s out there, waiting for him to save her. So he does – and their love story starts all over again. But not quite, because she’s changed and he needs to make her come back to him and what they were. Like in Suzie’s other stories, “Serendipity”’s Edward is sweet, tender, loving, adorable, gorgeous and all the pain he has to go through just makes you want to cuddle him. Bella’s a very realistic character – she infuriates you one minute, then makes you smile only to raise your eyebrows a moment later. That’s what makes her such a balanced, truthful heroine. The bad guy (Jake) is going to enrage you, he’s a smooth but what he does is almost unforgivable. I’ll let you judge for yourselves. Meanwhile, Suzie and her characters will take you on a journey that will make you believe in the power of Serendipity :)
