When I first started writing over a year ago, I seemed to have one constant reviewer. She would PM me and we would chat at length about stories, TV, movies and the hotness that is Rob Pattinson and I am proud to say she was my first real friend in the fan fiction world.
Well, she’s not exactly one for shameless self promotion, so I didn’t know for a little bit, but she had written her own story, entitled ‘Someone to Watch Over Me’. This was her first foray into writing anything major or multi-chapter, so being the person I am, I forced myself into her world, became her beta and helped her any way I could.
‘Someone to Watch over Me’ is the story of Edward and Bella who meet by chance at Bella’s summer job at a pizza place in Forks. Bella has recently become single after her relationship with Jacob fell apart and Edward is on the verge of moving to Seattle to start working at a hospital as a doctor. The sparks fly between the two of them, literally, leading to a lovely, romantic and sweet romance between them.
Flightlessbird11 does a wonderful job describing the anxiety, awkwardness and normal concerns of every fledging relationship. From their beginning days in Forks, unsure of each other, to further along as they are getting to know each other more, Flightlessbird11 manages to compel and hold the interest of the reader. Case in point:
Before I even looked up, I ended up running into something. Someone. I looked down, because whoever I bumped into was definitely shorter than me, and realized that it was my brown-haired beauty.
“Oh god, I’m so sorry. I wasn’t watching where I was going,” she said as she immediately started to blush. After a few moments of gaping, I realized that I hadn’t spoken to her yet.
“Oh. Don’t worry about it, it was my fault, I wasn’t paying any attention,” I managed to blurt out when I realized that I had a pretty firm grip on her body. I instantly let go of her once I realized this. I decided that the quickest way to get my cell phone back was to introduce myself, since we couldn’t really get anywhere with ourselves before that, and plus, I just really wanted to know her name.
“I’m Edward Cullen, by the way. I remember you from earlier in the evening,” I mentally cringed at what I had just said. Lame. I looked at her and she was staring at me blankly for a moment, I was hoping she would help me out and tell me her name so I could stop wondering what it was. That reminded me. I glanced down at her once more. Brown. Her eyes were brown.
She shook her head slightly and said “Bella Swan.” I smiled, hopefully not too much. Bella. Yes, she definitely was. I held out my hand to her, so we could shake hands, before I noticed that when she touched me there was some kind of electricity that she emitted. I knew she felt it too, because as soon as her hand touched mine, she immediately pulled away. She furrowed her brow for a second, and she must have decided that I hadn’t hurt her, so we tried the hand-shaking thing again. I felt the same strange electricity as before, but this time I could feel it long enough to realize that it didn’t hurt. It actually felt good.
As if that doesn’t make it compelling enough, this little story has been nominated for an Indie TwiFic Award for Complete AH Story that Knocks You Off Your Feet, and I think this nomination is well deserved. So head on over to the story and take a look at the story. You won’t be disappointed, and show this little author some love.
Thanks, CPW
