Yesterday we had a vigorous debate about the analysis done on the 10 second Eclipse trailer. Today, of course we have the full glorious thing of beauty called the Eclipse trailer. Here are excerpts of comments from several major news outlets. What say you?

What do you think of Victoria/Bryce, by the way?  I think she looked better here than in the “leaked” pictures none of us looked at.  And – I noticed it too – NO WOLVES were shown!  What does that portend?  Hmmmm?

From MTVBlog

Today is an important day for “Twilight” fans. The release of the debut trailer for “Eclipse” marks the start of the official run-up to the movie’s June 30, 2010 release. You’ve all known it was coming of course. But the below video is your first motion picture proof that it actually exists. In three short months, you’ll get to see exactly what “30 Days of Night” director David Slade did differently than his predecessors in this third chapter of Stephenie Meyer’s vampire romance saga.

I won’t pretend to be a Twilighter, but I do have a few observations to share on the new trailer. I find it interesting, though not terribly surprising, that this first look is focused mostly on the developing love triangle between Edward, Jacob and Bella. That is of course what longtime fans of the series are most interested in seeing.

That said, much has been made of Slade being in the director’s chair, how his influence coupled with the content of the source material might make this the most broadly appealing “Twilight” movie yet. I haven’t read the book myself, but as I understand it there’s quite a bit of action in the third installment. My guess is that subsequent trailers and TV spots will focus more in that direction, on selling the movie to a wider male audience.

I’d like to hear what you think though. Does this trailer deliver for you? Do you think there’s too much focus on the story, not enough on the eye candy that will draw in larger crowds? Or are you still too starry-eyed from the sight of a shirtless Taylor Lautner to care?
Unrelated question: what do you think of our first look at Bryce Dallas Howard as Victoria?

And another from MTV

What’s Up With Kristen’s Hair? The first thing you might be wondering is why Kristen Stewart’s hair looks a bit strange. The reason is that after finishing work on “New Moon” in May, Stewart chopped off her locks for her role as ’70s rocker Joan Jett in “The Runaways.” Shooting on that biopic wrapped last August, just weeks before the start of “Eclipse.” To maintain continuity with Bella Swan’s appearance in “New Moon,” Stewart was forced to don the wig you see her wearing in the “Eclipse” trailer. Some might say the do looks oddly similar to the wig Taylor Lautner had to wear in “Twilight.”

What Happened To Victoria? Just over a minute into the trailer, we get a glimpse of the film’s central villain: Victoria. But that’s not the Victoria we know from “Twilight” and “New Moon.” That’s because last July, only weeks before “Eclipse” was due to begin filming, Bryce Dallas Howard replaced Rachelle Lefevre in the role she’d played for two movies. “I was stunned by Summit’s decision to recast the role of Victoria for ‘Eclipse,’ ” the actress said in a statement.

“It was actually a really unfortunate circumstance where the actress who everyone really cared deeply about, who has done an amazing job in this role, was unavailable,” Howard told MTV News late last year. “They were looking for someone to fill that slot. It was right before production actually happened, so of course there was intimidation there and feeling a huge responsibility to do my best.”

How Is A Human Turned Into A Vampire In The “Twilight” Universe? A key driving point in “Eclipse” is the question of whether Pattinson’s Edward will turn Bella into a vampire. “Why are you so against me becoming like you?” she asks at one point in the trailer.

Edward’s answer is that he knows the consequences of becoming a vampire, in that immortal bloodsuckers do not age, while all their loved ones eventually die. Also, there’s the matter of how a human is transformed from a human into a vampire. The answer is that it’s unbearably painful. The process begins when a vampire pierces a human’s skin and releases venom from his glands into the human’s bloodstream. For days on end, the venom courses slowly through the human’s veins, burning ferociously as it travels and eventually causing the heart to stop pumping. It would be no easy task for Edward to inflict such pain, nor would it be easy for Bella to willingly invite it.

Why Is Everyone So Scared Of Victoria? Why, because of her army of newborn vampires, of course. See, freshly converted vamps pose a potent threat, as they’re often uncontrollably vicious killers. Victoria has been going around Seattle slaughtering humans and building a legion of newborns. Victoria on her own is a danger that Edward and his crew could likely face. But Victoria and an army of out-of-control vampires? That’s serious cause for concern.

What, No Werewolves?! The first “New Moon” trailer blew fans away with its first glimpse at the transformation of Lautner’s Jacob Black from human to werewolf. But if you were hoping to catch some more shape-shifting action in the “Eclipse” trailer, you’ll be disappointed.

Yet have no fear! “Eclipse” is set to feature a slew of wolf battles. You don’t think Jacob and his crew are going to walk away from a fight with Victoria’s newborn army, do you? And besides, it’s hard to complain about a lack of a hirsute Jacob when the trailer delivers what you really want: the dude flashing those famous abs.
And from EW, this little clip:

Somehow, watching Jacob profess his love to Bella pales to seeing the leaping entrance of Bryce Dallas Howard as Victoria. (Perhaps because he’s got his shirt on.) Maybe it’s just the fact that her locks are more sleek and fiery than Rachelle Lefevre’s, but I already approve of Howard. She feels like a more worthy opponent for the more mature Edward (those new contacts are working), Jacob, and Bella.

What do you think? Do we need to start a Team Victoria? Is the darker tone of Eclipse playing like you thought it would?

After yesterday’s vigorous debate (hahaha, Joyce, you made me laugh, but it’s true, we did have a debate), I feel obliged to comment here (especially considering MTV is involved again)
NO, MTV, the thing that most of us “really want” to see in Eclipse is not a bunch of guys walking around naked! We want to see the intensity of the tent scene, Edward’s internal conflict and Bella’s embarrassment in the bedroom scene, the fights, the proposal…. Claiming that Jake’s scenes are not as strong because he is not NAKED is, yes, i dare say it, OBJECTIFYING!!! How can you judge how strong a scene is by the amount of clothes the actors in it have on???
Apart from that, I thought the analysis is pretty decent. Edward looked more mature to me too, but I hope they have not overdone it!
I can’t wait for the next traielrs with the Cullens, the fighting and the scenes we all crave (again, not the NAKED ABS ones!)

Oh my goodness, that was eloquent! “Claiming that Jake’s scenes are not as strong because he is not NAKED is, yes, i dare say it, OBJECTIFYING!!! How can you judge how strong a scene is by the amount of clothes the actors in it have on???” And I totally agree. I hope the “powers that be” read this.

Here, here Chrissy! Good word usage! This analysis ws defintiely better than yesterdays. But you’re right about what we want to see most! I can’t wait for that tent scene….I jsut hope they haven’t made it too dark and all about the fighting. Eclispe is more about then whole Bella/Edward/Jacob thing than anything else. And yes, MORE Cullen family!

thank you both! I may be Team Edward till death, but jake deserves some respect (at least Taylor as an actor does!).
I’m hoping the film won’t be dark, because it’s not supposed to be. If they wanted a dark and depressing film, they should have hired Slade for New Moon and left Eclipse for Chris Weitz.
I can’t wait to see more action in the next trailers, but I insist on the love triangle as the main focus of the film :)
By the way, the change of the proposal quote really annoyed me. I wonder why Rosenberg changed “I promise to love you forever, every single day of forever” to “I promise to love you every moment of forever”? Some may think I am way too picky, but this is perhaps the most important quote in the book, or even in the entire saga. I know it’s a small change BUT it’s these quotes that we LOVE and remember (imagine if the lion/lamb was something like “Then the lion realised he really likes the lamb”). It’s not like they save time by changing the quote and it doesn’t sound as good, because the repetition of “forever” in the original emphasises the message better…
Anyway, sorry for the rant!
June will answer all our question :)

I have one more thing to add….the scenery is breathe taking! And I’m not talking about the actors either ;-)

by Rachelle in March 11 - 4:40 pm

Kudos to everyone for speaking their minds. I agree with you Chrissy and I will add that I am so upset that in this whole trailer, not one Cullen was shown….what the french toast! I know Eclipse isnt all about the Cullens but you bet that they are a big part of it. I hope the next trailer is better in that aspect.

One thing that made me laugh….
“I won’t pretend to be a Twilighter, but I do have a few observations to share on the new trailer. I find it interesting, though not terribly surprising, that this first look is focused mostly on the developing love triangle between Edward, Jacob and Bella. That is of course what longtime fans of the series are most interested in seeing.”

Um….if the person isnt a Twilighter why are they acting like they understand what longtime fans of the series want to see? That is a backwards type of logic. So in other words, I dont know anything about the books or movies really but I know what the fans of the books and movies want….what! *scratches head* Who hires these people!

by chrissy in March 11 - 6:37 pm

can i write these articles? i will do it for free, i will just watch the trailer ALL day long! ;)

by Cris in March 12 - 8:54 am

Yes, how can she comment on a trailer based on such a popular book and admit she hasn’t read it??? like if there are not enough people out there who know the book inside out and could do a great review!
Can I just make a little critic of the trailer??? I don’t like the new Victoria, such a shame is not Rachelle… Can’t believe they changed a character half way, not good.
Apart from that, I loved the trailer and can’t wait for the film to come out.
