“Because I read Twilight I have unrealistic expectations about men.”

Is this just a funny line or have we actually adopted some unrealistic ideals for men based around a fictional character?

A Digial Spy article explores this dynamic:

Dr Lisa Bode, an associate lecturer in film at the University of Queensland, says that after reading the books, women are gaining unrealistic expectations of men. She believes that Robert Pattinson’s vampire character Edward Cullen is so perfect that ‘regular’ guys don’t stand a chance with girls.

According to the ABC, Bode said: “They’re idealizing Edward to the point where real men can’t compete anymore. It’s a kind of performative thing, an empowering gesture.”

They go on to say that after centuries of unrealistic expectations about the “ideal” woman, maybe turn-about is fair play?

Thanks to Twilight Treasury for finding this.

I understand that some people may fantasize about Edward and how they would like to find him in rel life, but if they aren’t able to discern fact from fiction then they do have a problem.
However I think that most Twilight fans understand that Edward isn’t the ideal man, he is also flawed in many ways.
I think anyone looking for a mate in real life and is a fan of Twilight may be influenced to look for characteristics that drew them to the fictional Edward, but we know Edward isn’t going to walk off the page and into our lives.

Maybe men need to up their standards to Edward’s!

Yeah I agree Debbie!

I think women just want to find a man who puts them before anything else and will do anything to make sure they are happy and safe. I believe my fiance is about as close to Edward as real life gets. My fiance is to me the way Edward is to Bella. He is what I need, and I am what he needs.

But on the other hand, maybe women want a man who is painfully beautiful. =D

Women just need an Edward I think. We don’t want a macho man who’s hot for a girl with a D cup. We want someone pure and honest. I agree with Melissa and Debbie.
Greetings from Belgium :p.
