meskada LG Reviews for Meskada, Staring Earstwhile Vampire Kellan Lutz

These are a few reviews for Meskada, at least where they concern Kellan Lutz. Meskada is now playing at the Tribeca Film Festival.

The first review was what caught my eye initially – where they call Kellan an erstwhile vampire? Meaning “former”? He still is a Twilight vampire! Two maybe 3 movies to be released yet in the series. We Twilighters have no intention of letting go of Kellan early, that’s for sure.

Beautiful in its rawness, Meskada feels shabby, right down to the quality of film. That’s simply one way director Josh Sternfeld (Winter Solstice, TFF ‘04) draws you into the themes of poverty and struggle in his tale of two towns located in Meskada County: one rich, one very poor…

Sternfeld’s shooting technique is subtle. Much like cracking a homicide case, it’s all in the details. For instance, a shot where the camera struggles to focus for a split second or the way the land in Caswell is so rich and green, but the houses are decidedly poor—all serve to highlight the collision of so many opposites.

The acting in the movie (including erstwhile Twilight vampire Kellan Lutz) is equally discrete yet powerful, bringing to life a cast of characters with no shortage of helplessness, frustration and rage buried below the surface.

Tribeca

Like many a film that has its premiere at Tribeca, “Meskada” is earnest and unremarkable, with a cast stacked high with semi-known actors, like Nick Stahl as small-town detective Noah Cordin, or Rachel Nichols from “Alias” as the sheriff’s deputy partnered with him on a sensitive case, or some guy from “The Black Donnellys,” or some guy from “Twilight,” or “Boondock Saint” Norman Reedus. Its ace in the hole, in terms of publicity hooks, is that it’s the film debut of Grace Gummer, daughter of Meryl Streep.

Some guy from Twilight! Oh, come on…Maybe Kellan IS “flying under the radar” as he once famously quipped.

indie-eye

Grace Gummer is extremely humble. “Am I in it?” she says of her performance in Meskada — “my part is very small.” Never mind that she has a love scene with one of Hollywood’s ‘most currently desirable,’ Kellan Lutz. She can next be seen in Larry Crowne. (2011)

huffingtonpost

Were there gratuitous shots of Kellan’s abs? No! Despite the promise of shirtlessness, we didn’t even get to see four parts of Kellan’s six-pack. The movie’s sole love scene is between Kellan and Grace, and not only did it contain a paltry amount of abs, it was mostly just awkward.
