Have you seen this new Twilight The Video Game? It is still in the development stage, but take a look at the website – it looks really intriguing. Imagine getting inside Edward’s head in Midnight Sun!
The game’s creator, Brandon Gardner, describes it on his website as a “journey through the events of the Twilight Saga.” The Cullen and Swan houses will be the central hubs from which the game will expand. You can play as a vampire, human or werewolf. ( By the way, it is NOT a MMORPG.)
CBA was recently granted an exclusive interview about one of the game’s new features, the “what if” factor. This feature in the game, allows the player to make decisions that are not made in the original storyline. Here is how the games creator, Brandon Gardner, explained it when asked:
The “What If” Factor
Basically the feature revolves around the idea of allowing players to experience the story in a non linear format that allows them to essentially explore “what if” this had happened in the book. How would changing a particular event change the outcome of the game? It’s being able to explore Twilight in ways that allow players to see what might happen. Like how the movie explored well what if such and such event happen? It would allow deeper gameplay, and would help to expand the events in the books.
First of all can you tell me a bit about how you came to be involved in a Twilight project like this?
Well on the first day that Twilight came out on DVD I borrowed the movie from a friend. I watched the movie, and I was hooked instantly. After watching the movie I jumped on the internet to find out all I could about Twilight. I bought and read the entire Twilight Saga within a few days. I thought about how Twilight would make a great game if it was developed correctly, and I couldn’t find any mention about a Twilight game being developed. At the time I was also considering different things for the foundation of my graduation project, and Twilight was the obvious choice for me.
On to the “what if” factor…
Can you describe it in more depth for us?
There are an unlimited amount of possibilities that could have played out had any character made a different choice within the events of The Twilight Saga. Think of the “what if” factor is a multi-verse where there are infinite amount of possible outcomes within a given universe.
Can you walk us through an example?
Imagine for a moment that at the end of Breaking Dawn that the Volturi decided to attack instead of walking away. There are a number of situations within the saga that I am constantly thinking of “what if” this event had played out differently. With The Twilight Saga being presented in an interactive medium this allows the story to break away from being passive and following a predetermined route. The game will allow players to explore different “what if” situations within the game, and alter the outcome of the story.
How do you access them–how do you know there are other choices when you get to them?
Simply making a different decision can change the outcome of each choice. Some outcomes may be very clear prior to making the decision while other outcomes may not be as obvious.
Once you set one choice, can you add other deviations to your adventure?
There will be a large amount of possibilities that will allow for deviations of possible outcomes from such choices.
Where did you get the idea for this?
The initial idea for this began when I was watching through the making of feature on the Twilight DVD. At one point Stephenie Meyer talks about how things in the movie could have been something that could have happened in the book. The problem with book and movie mediums is that fact that they are passive to their audience, but in an interactive medium you can allow the player to change the course of the game through a nonlinear path that can have multiple branches of choices.
